The family is so used to Mirabel trying to help and try to prove herself to them, that it would be unusual for Mirabel to just stop.
What if one day Mirabel suddenly stops trying to prove herself to her family making them a bit disturbed?
She stops trying to prove herself to them because she noticed that no matter how hard she tries, she would get pushed away, so she just stopped.
She meets another family, which gave all their attention to her. She felt loved.
But everything is not as it seems…

Summary
Imogen has been struggling with some things since she was a child. “What kind of things?” Well, I’m glad you asked. Things like a runaway/missing/maybe dead mother when she was young, a father who shut her out when her mental issues appeared to be out of his depth, raging nightmares that woke her up screaming, among other things. She has issues. But she’s been dealing with these issues for a long long time. She has in under control. Kind of. What happens when she meets her roommate who doesn’t have the same hold over her trauma like Imogen does?

“You didn’t get a Gift?” Cecilia asked quietly, looking suddenly near tears.
Bruno shrugged. “Nope,” he said.
Sierra looked between Bruno, Mirabel and the mural. “If I was you, I’d be really sad,” she said.
Mirabel tried not to wince. Kids were often sweet, but also very very blunt.
If it had been Mirabel, she would have made light of it. She would have tried to distract the kids with a joke or reassure them that of course she wasn’t sad.
But Tio Bruno only stared blankly at the mural for one long moment. He turned to the kids and shrugged again with a wry smile.
“You get used to it,” he said.
