Alexander Payne had few personal items with him in the trenches. A wooden carved cross his father had gifted him years ago, on the day he first left for St. Hilarion's. Flowers he pressed carefully between pieces of paper, waiting for them to dry so he could send them home to Anna, his bride-to-be. A few assorted letters from friends. A picture of him and his parents, as stiff and lifeless as they always seemed to be. Most precious to him, however, was the singular photograph of his younger brother Edwin and the treasured few letters the younger boy had sent. These were stored more carefully, at the top of the tin where they were less likely to be crushed.

Alexander Payne died during World War 1, in November 1915. He has spent the last 110 years confined to the battlefield where he died and the small town nearby, oblivious to the fact that his younger brother Edwin died merely a year after he had. When Alexander learns about the Dead Boy Detective Agency, he simply hopes he can find a way to break whatever tie is keeping him here, and instead comes face to face with Edwin for the first time in over a century

“I, a demon of the second circle, have been summoned before you, Charles Rowland, to serve you for a year and a day. During this year and a day, I must obey your every order to the best of my ability and with no intent to kill, harm, trick, inconvenience, or otherwise wish ill upon you. When our year and a day has concluded, ownership of your soul will fall to me, whereupon I am obligated to drag you to the appropriate level of Hell. That would be Lust, for the uninformed, which I highly suspect you are,” the demon finishes.
Charles takes all that in for a second, grappling with the idea that if Pain isn’t lying, then Charles is set to spend the rest of a very long eternity in Hell.
Crystal is gonna fucking kill him.

Summary
It is an incredibly frustrating thing, to have the knowledge of how to do something, without the practical skill needed to do so.
Viktor had tried several iterations of a new brace for his leg with what he had at his disposal, but all of them lacked the strength for true support, let alone longevity. This one had outlasted all the others at least, but had given out at what had to be the most inconvenient moment possible.
At least it is still mostly holding his weight, and he takes care to shift his cane tight to his hip to provide as much help as possible after he feels the give and bend of one of the bars. “Shit.”
Or: Viktor accidentally falls into a partnership with a blacksmith, after his leg brace breaks in the middle of the city.
