"Do you know what it was?" Zhou Zishu asks. He holds his fingers over Wen Kexing's racing pulse, burning wrist.
Wen Kexing shakes his head. Then, as if the words are dragged out of him. "I do know. I've used it once or twice."
Zhou Zishu gives him a surprised look. He knows quite well that Wen Kexing is not the mask of Philanthropist Wen that he wears—but he hardly expected an open admission of it.
"A potion that compels the truth," Wen Kexing says, and then gasps. He covers his own mouth with his free hand, while Zhou Zishu stares at him.

Summary
The young Viscount Xue Dingfei is slowly broken by Lord Pingnan, after being saved from the slaughter of the Loyal 300. Eventually, he is born anew as Dujun the Hermit, lonely and shattered, and a replacement for Xue Dingfei is found. Later, however, he finds solace in a new identity: that of Xie Wei, a gentle scholar. Sometimes he even thinks he is Xie Wei and can atone for his wrongs.
However, when he journeys to the capital with a fourteen-year-old girl called Jiang Xuening, they get caught in the snow, and Dingfei and Dujun come back. Will Jiang Xuening abandon Xie Wei? On one level he thinks that she should; but on another level, he’s delighted to find someone who understands him and stays with him.
[I write a lot of snippets and forget about them. This is one of the snippets I just found. So I tidied it up and put it here. Obviously, it discusses an abusive childhood.]

Summary
