Frustrated and weary of the endless lectures, Ei finally gave in. At Saiguu’s urging, Makoto’s wife, she allowed herself to cross paths with Yae Miko, Saiguu’s mischievous niece.
Neither Ei nor Miko believed in romance. Marriage, to them, was a strategy, a way to reach their own personal goals. And so they struck a deal.

Summary
There are legends that say the Sacred Sakura’s thunder sakura petals are part of the Almighty Narukami Ogosho, the result of her splitting her divine form into parts, and Miko wonders if Ei knows. Whether she knows Miko always sees her in the scattered petals, hears her in the calm rustle of its branches and feels her in the steady thrum of its warmth.
And she wonders, too, what Ei had intended when she left. She knew Miko was strong. Had she expected Miko to just keep living, as if she were never there? Or had she thought Miko would replace her, that she would find someone else to love–someone who deserved her better?
Had she thought Miko would still be hers, five centuries later?

“Don’t be ridiculous. We both know that’s not why you came.” Ei stares her down, her poise still firm. “Why have you come? What could you possibly want to hear from me that you can hear from no one else?”
“Maybe you’re right,” Miko bites back bitterly, venom spilling onto her tongue. “Maybe I didn’t come here to defend you, maybe I just want to know what you did to my fucking friend—”
The princess Raiden Makoto has been murdered, and her sister Raiden Ei, the head of the justice system, is accused of the crime. The only attorney who will defend her is Yae Miko, a tabloid lawyer with a dubious reputation within Inazuma’s legal community, who also happens to be Ei’s ex-wife.
