When Loid adopted Anya and they became the Forgers, he made sure that the families with the surnames Williams, Levski, Klein, and Roche that were most likely to adopt were either no longer in Berlint or at least lived in or worked on the other side of the city. For the ones that were too close for his liking, he made sure to keep Anya away from any neighborhoods or establishments that would increase the chance of a run-in. In a city of almost 1.3 million people, there was a very small chance that the Forgers would run into any of them by happenstance. It was such a small chance that Loid had discounted the possibility after doing the math.
Perhaps that chance hadn’t been small enough.

Twilight suddenly pulls back; that wretched voice dragging him back to the shackles of his dismal reality. The reality that this woman wasn’t supposed to be anything more than a pawn to him. Stop denying the inevitable. She’s keeping a secret, and you know it.
Hurt immediately floods Yor’s starlit eyes. “Why did you stop?” she whispers, plump lips slightly swollen. “Did I…did I do something wrong?”
She doesn’t deserve this. Doesn’t deserve to be touched with his filthy hands, to be kissed by a liar’s tongue. But she sighs underneath his renewed desperation, her voice calling out a name he’s grown to resent. The raised scars on her thighs scrape against his palms.
Damn it all.

There had been rumors that Mestionora had snuck out from under her grandfather's cloak to read in the mortal realm. Nobody in the royal academy knew where the rumors had started, but it was known that she preferred reading by the windows and that the rays of the goddess of light would make her hair glitter with stars to indicate their protection over their adored grandaughter.
Ferdinand had heard as much from Justus and had determined it must simply be another of the royal academy “mysteries”, which all had explanations based on his investigations. The Goddess’ of time’s gazebo didn’t play any mischief, it was simply lovers too engrossed in each other to notice time passing. The vanishing Shrine had simply been destroyed by his uncle Bonifatius. Gewinnen sets did not decide ditter outcomes, statues did not dance upon graduations, and Mestionora had not descended to read in the library.
Or so he thought.
