The Netherbrain is defeated, and Minthara Baenre finds herself oddly disappointed. She should be celebrating with the vagabonds and strays she aligned herself with, right? Savouring her vengeance on the cult that wronged her, with their blood still fresh on her tongue and matted in her hair, but instead, she feels cold and empty—and she can’t help but notice a particular Cleric has a matching empty look in her eyes, too.
Everyone around her is celebrating, and yet the moment feels strangely reminiscent of the day Shadowheart and her friends danced and sang with the tieflings in the Emerald Grove. Once again, Shadowheart feels adrift and confused, the wine working its way into her veins and numbing the dread for what is to come tomorrow. She has no family and little faith to guide her, and everyone else seems to have a plan for what's next—everyone else but Minthara.
