Will’s brain almost shuts down, he’s not sure how to handle the tenderness of Mike's movements or the fondness with which his words fall out of his mouth.
He had been so focused on simply transforming his heart’s whims into paint that he never stopped to think about the consequences of that transformation, the vulnerability in someone inspecting it, in feeling it.
And now Mike was doing exactly that, and had been doing that—unannounced to Will—the entire time.
His finger trails down the tip of his sword, tracing along the shield, caressing the heart, “You put so much into this.”
Will wants to reach out and take his finger and press it into his chest so that it might sink past his ribs, and Mike could use his gentleness to trace the lining of his heart.

Summary
7 years after the first scene in Merrily We Roll Along Frank Shepard receives a mysterious package at his mansion in Bel Air. Suddenly he's forced to confront the ghosts of his past, mainly the ghost of himself.
This was written extremely hastily after seeing the Merrily proshot and just wanting to give these beautifully complex characters the happy ending I think they each deserve. Sometimes when I watch a musical I don't want to see myself reflected in it as much as this did. Sometimes I just want to root for them to be happy at the end (the beginning?).

From inside, Frank heard the sound of footsteps approaching, and the unlocking of a deadbolt. Then Charley Kringas opened the door.For five seconds, the men stared at one another in disbelieving silence. Charley’s beard had grown, and he’d traded his old scratched-up glasses for contacts, so Frank had full view of every feature of the man’s face. Almost immediately, Frank became overwhelmed with emotion. After all this time, there was Charley, right here. Door open, mouth agape, for once in his life unable to speak.
