If anything, he smells like nights in camp. Like woodsmoke and a chilly breeze. The comfortable scent of bodies in the same place for too long.

“I told you lot, I do not wish to be disturbed!” John barked as the door whined open on its hinges.
“I hope that's not how you speak to your servants,” a familiar voice replied.
John turned slowly, convinced he must be hallucinating from lack of sleep, or the wine finally going to his head; hell maybe he's fallen and hit his head and was currently bleeding out on the floor.
The tall figure by the door was shrouded in a dark cloak, but the silhouette cut out by the glow of the fireplace was so familiar.
“Sam?” John hesitated, voice brittle and threatening to break.
