Summary
'"It’s not a bad job for a person who likes to think. Each day presents new challenges. Each client is a new puzzle to solve," said Caleb
“Do you intend to solve me?”
The man fixed him with a look of such sharp intelligence that Essek was skewered by it.
“I’d like to.”
Essek felt his cheeks darken and his breath catch. He had come into this with no expectations of anything beyond putting up with things until he could make his excuses and then never letting Verin talk him into anything ever again. Now though, he had to know. This man was a fascinating enigma, his own little puzzle.
“Show me.”'
...
Essek gets talked into a night out with Verin and his soldier friends. Little did he know they were going to a brothel.- Language:

Summary
"I still never quite understand why you like being here while I get ready," Essek says to the mirror as he tilts his head and starts to carefully don jewellery. Several earrings are looped through the appropriate holes; one long chain is dangled carefully from a piece that goes on the tip of his long drow ear. "Especially when we are not planning an entrance together. I fear I'm not terribly engaging."
Three times Caleb and Essek get ready together.

Summary
“I would like you to know me,” Caleb says.
It feels like a secret. Like the darkest part of him cracked open; all his months and years of hiding, of wrapping his arms and scratching the bindings, of not loving, not loving anything but an unkillable cat — it’s unraveling around him. He feels naked. He feels the way he did the first time Pumat Sol spelled him clean.
“I find that — I would like you to know me,” he says, again.

Summary
There is something incredibly flattering about the thought that one of the most gifted mages Caleb has ever known has found one of Caleb’s own spells worth figuring out for himself.
Essek turns from the arcane doorway shimmering in blues and violets before him with the smug appearance of the cat that got the cream. “I did some noodling, as you call it.”
“So you did,” Caleb says faintly.

Summary
'How do you give back to a man who – changes you? Who writes something new and different over the surface of who you are? Who gives you – ’
Essek stops. Because his voice is splintering, and because he could live a thousand lifetimes and never find words for what Caleb has done for him.
‘Hope? Well, you say thank you, for starters.’
(In which Caduceus and Essek discuss growth, and wanting things, and green beans. And Caleb.)

Summary
Shadowhand Essek of den Thelyss has been stripped of both title and den in all but name, but Light forbid he forget his manners. Even if his betrothed is, apparently, a woman with enough skin left bare to make him lower his gaze out of respect for her modesty.
[In which an arrangement between the Cobalt Soul and the Dynasty to foster peace between nations becomes a cover for exile, betrayal, and espionage, and perhaps even--at the end of it all--a real marriage.]
