In psychology, ironic process theory (IPT), also known as the pink elephant paradox or white bear phenomenon, suggests that when an individual intentionally tries to avoid thinking a certain thought or feeling a certain emotion, a paradoxical effect is produced: the attempted avoidance not only fails in its object but in fact causes the thought or emotion to occur more frequently and more intensely.

Summary
Dennis Whitaker’s life is in freefall.

“You’re too young to be saying shit like that,” Robby said. “And definitely too young to pick up a smoking habit.”
“I’m not that young, sir,” Whitaker mumbled, tapping ash like it was muscle memory. “And it’s not a new habit. Been smoking since I snuck a pack of Newports from my brother’s stash when I was thirteen.”
“How old are you now?”
Whitaker turned to look him in the eye as he took a long drag. “Twenty six," he said like a question.
Robby’s gaze was fixated on the point where Whitaker’s lips wrapped around the filter of the cigarette. Huh. He was right. Twenty six wasn't that young.
Robby finds out Whitaker smokes, and why, then crosses several professional boundaries in his pursuit to take care of the younger man.
