Sometimes they would pass through to the other side. But every single day he would find the pile of rocks back at his feet. On one day, frustration got the better of him, and coaxed him into kicking one of the rocks. He ended up with four bruised toes and teary eyes, along with a helpless tremor at his lips. He had just set them free yesterday.

They weren't supposed to be there, so every time he chucked them back till they passed through again. But they kept appearing day after day, and it wasn't easy to send them back from where they came from. On one day, frustration took over, and he threw one at the barrier just to see it recoil back.
