"Can you touch me?" Is what Bucky blurted.
"W—Come again?" Sam gawked, baffled. Obviously he hadn't expected such an upfront request. Bucky didn't blame him, because he could not have possibly worded that any worse. It definitely didn't help that it was one twenty seven in the damn morning, he was running on about thirty minutes of sleep, and he was standing on Sam's porch drenched in rainwater.
He felt so ridiculous.
It didn't help that Sam, despite being visibly bewildered, had a hint of amusement in his expression, while Bucky knew he 100% looked one twig snap away from dropping off of the face of the earth indefinitely.
Or: Bucky Barnes realized that he didn't exactly understand gentleness as much as he'd like to. An impulsive spurt of confidence happened to land him right on Sam's doorstep.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Bucky said, waving Sam off. "Just got a little lightheaded," he finished, knowing he had to give the other man some form of explanation.
Unfortunately, this didn't seem to convince Sam, but actually made him pause, considering.
"Oh yeah?" Sam replied with forced casualty. "When's the last time you ate then?" he asked, slightly less subtle.
Now it was Bucky's turn to pause. He...didn't remember. His eyebrows furrowed together, and he felt Sam take another step closer to him.

He heard Sam’s steps approach him, then felt arms gently slink around his waist from behind, and he smiled a little. Sam hummed, leaning up to brush a kiss to his temple.
“I take it none of this blood is yours?” he said by way of greeting, his voice low.
Bucky bit his lip. “Some of it,” he admitted, and turned around.
Sam sucked in a sharp breath. “Jesus, Buck,” he breathed, his concerned gaze flickering over Bucky’s face. “You alright?”
Shrugging, Bucky averted his eyes. “Bruised and battered ‘s all, sweetheart.”

“You’re gonna have to come in eventually,” says Sam, then he takes a deep breath and steps away from Barnes, back towards the club. “But it doesn’t have to be now.” Barnes’ eyes widen, and he goes utterly still. “I’ve got some conditions though, if I’m gonna let you go.”
A year after the helicarriers go down, Sam finds not the Winter Soldier, but Bucky Barnes, who's trying his best to live and not just survive while on the run. Sam finds him and keeps finding him, and eventually, Sam finds himself too.
An alternate take on canon where Sam and Bucky have been secretly meeting up since after CATWS.
