Since the age of 4, Alexandre-Laurent Escoffier had loved the game of hockey. All he talked or thought about had to have something to do with hockey. 14 years later, sitting in a cramped arena in a state he can’t even pronounce in between his mother and father, he still couldn’t believe how he ended up at that point.
“For the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, New York Rangers are proud to select…” By that point, everything else was tuned out. Alexandre stood up, hugged his mom, ignored a stifled nod from his dad, and went up to the stage. That was it. Everything he had ever worked for had payed off, leading up to this very moment. The first French defender the league has seen.

Summary
Will had already gotten his one freebie of an ‘intense homoerotic friendship that ruins your life’ out of his way in college, as one should. Unfortunately Macklin hadn’t gotten that memo, and had spent his time in Boston actually focusing on hockey (read: working himself beyond the limits of sanity). So now Will found himself attached at the hip to another teammate, but this time, he didn’t have the same plausible deniability.
Macklin knew what he was here for when he came to San Jose, hockey. But, well, he needed a ride to the rink, and someone to go over plays with, and someone to watch movies with on the plane. Will was the perfect candidate, the right balance of serious and also willing to pull Mack out of whatever new avenue of insanity he was turning down. So, yeah, Will was pretty great.
