    Summary

Anger surges, flushing her cheeks and pushing the words right out of her throat. “I wonder how you can love him.”

Mrs. Barlow looks up. Her eyes are wide with surprise, though a hint of a smile plays at her lips. She looks neither angry nor put-out, nor any of the other emotions Abigail might’ve expected after hearing the accusatory tone of her own voice. “I have waited quite a long time for somebody to ask me that."

    Summary

Isaac knows he’s rambling, knows how nonsensical that must’ve sounded, but how the hell do you tell someone 'Thank you for creating and raising and shaping the first and last person I’ll probably ever love like that?' To her credit, Melissa doesn’t look surprised. She has that look on her face that reminds him of all those months ago in the hospital when she’d asked him if he had any other “emergency werewolf contacts.” 'Call Scott' he’d said, and he’d known in that moment what his expression was giving away because her eyes had softened around the corners in a kind of understanding.

    Summary

Not two weeks ago, Sam had gotten a text from Natasha that just said “seen this?” with a link attached. The article included both a transcription and a photograph of an old letter, never sent but finally unearthed from dusty archives by a nosy historian on the hunt for notoriety. Damaged by the ravages of war and time, it was still intact enough to get the gist: Bucky Barnes, venerated American hero, had written a love letter to a guy back home.

Public response to the letter’s been varied. Someone on Twitter very dryly pointed out that if the US had shipped sixteen-thousand men and women overseas, the fact that a few were gay shouldn’t be a surprise. There’s been some loud demands to remove mentions of Barnes from museums, to wipe his affiliation with their star-spangled icon from the history books. But by and large, no matter which side they stand on, everyone wants to know what the hell Captain America has to say about it.

    Summary

Beholden to nobody and nothing and tired of the same four walls of his family home, Cregan decides to go south, follow the Kingsroad right out of Winterfell and hunt down his father’s old friends. He doesn’t hear a whisper of the Winter Wolves down the whole length of the Kingsroad, but in King’s Landing a rather dubious source of gossip says that last they heard, the Wolves were in Tumbleton. Maybe they were right, or maybe not, but by the time Cregan and his battered old truck make it to the Reach, the Wolves are long gone.

    Summary

    “Stop!”

The kingsflame’s glass mount rattles as Aedion’s palms slam down. He’s standing now, towering over Weylan with his lips pulled back from his teeth like a cornered animal, eyes wide and wild. “If you think to pit me against Aelin by comparing how much we’ve suffered, you’ll find it a futile task. I’m not easily moved to self-pity.”

At that, Weylan can’t help an amused huff. “I don’t wish to put you at odds with your cousin, I only want you to convince me.” Aedion blinks owlishly, his bristling anger simmering off slowly into the stuffy office air. “Stop looming, sit down, and convince me that I should put the wellbeing of my country in the hands of an eighteen year-old assassin.”

    -

Aedion does not convince him, but it is the effort to understand each other that proves most important in the end.

    Summary

When Aegon Targaryen returned to King’s Landing he declared for all to hear, “The time of hiding is done. Let the ravens fly that the realm may know the pretender is dead, and their true king is coming home to reclaim his father’s throne.” It seemed then, to the smallfolk, that the war was over, but leal men and women answered Aegon’s challenge with force, Starks and Arryns and Darklyns riding under a queenless banner to unseat the Usurper. Though Black victory was nigh, the succession remained deep in doubt until the day a ghost arose from the waters of the Gullet. “The time of hiding is done,” came his answer, a mockery of Aegon’s words, “And the true king is coming home to reclaim his mother’s throne.”

Thus was the bloody beginning of an otherwise long and peaceable reign. He would wear many epithets throughout his rule; the Black, the Undead, the Dragonless, even the Strong, from those intent on losing their tongues. The king’s favorite moniker, however, was one reserved for those who knew him best: Jace.

    Summary

On Monday business is as usual with Marga Bolton, while Tuesday is all paperwork and no meetings. Wednesday starts out fine for about twenty minutes, until he realizes it’s officially been a week since The Phone Call... Jace gets to call himself one week older while Luke’s the exact same age he’ll be for the rest of eternity.

That thought drives Jace to the only bar in town.

It's a dive in every sense of the word. The handful of tables are always sticky, the lighting is never set above “slight visibility”, and there’s a shotgun mounted above the bar for "emergencies". The first time he’d ordered a drink, the big guy behind the bar had raked him over with a gaze so discerning Jace had flushed to the tips of his ears. He’d either deemed Jace legal or decided he didn’t care enough either way because he never asked for ID, and a few minutes’ conversation with a regular had told Jace several pieces of useful information: bartender’s name is Cregan, yes he’s always like that, no you can’t pay with a credit card.

    Summary

Baela Targaryen — Queen Who Never Was like her grandmother before her, and Princess of Dragonstone no more — takes one step closer. In their proximity, Baela can see the stern set of his face dissolve into puzzlement as she reaches up, fists one hand in the furs upon his shoulder, and begs, “Take me as your wife, Lord Stark. Share with me your weirwood gods and frozen halls, and allow me to ride and hunt and hawk as any man does. Whisk me north of the Neck before they stuff me in a gown and sell me to some fat southron lord to be bred like cattle.”

Already seeing the refusal taking shape on his lips, Baela curls her free hand into Cregan’s other shoulder, holds him in an iron grip, and leans so close their lips nearly brush. “Marry me, Lord Stark, and have me as you could never have him.”

[This is pretty much entirely F&B compliant, and spoiler-heavy for the end of the Dance. You don’t HAVE to have read the book for this fic to make sense (I hope) but if you’re not keen on spoilers, then this isn’t the one for you. If you don’t care or you already know what happens, then by all means…read away :)]

    Summary

Some days Cregan can hardly bear to look upon Rickon, but other days he thinks that perhaps the life his son took so unwittingly was not lost…Not wholly, at least, not when Arra so clearly lives on through her child.

Cregan has no such reminders of Jacaerys. It is all he can do to hold onto a living remnant of one of his dead, to remind himself that although he has lost time and again, the gods have not taken everything.

    Summary

There is a long, horrible moment wherein the only movement is the falling snow around them and the barely perceptible twitch of Jacaerys' lips. Nobody could ever think Cregan cruel enough nor humorous enough to jest of such a thing, yet clear as day he can see that painful sliver of a second between Jacaerys' ears hearing the words and his heart sensing the truth of them.

The grief that tears across the prince’s expression is so sudden, so raw, that Cregan has to look away.

    Summary

"We have a proposal for you; one of marriage, not politics, though in our world those are really one and the same. Our second-eldest, Aevanna, recently celebrated her 19th nameday… just weeks short of your eldest child’s, as fate would have it.

Relations between Terrassen and Adarlan are amicable, but peace can be fragile. Marriage once united the Galathynius and Havilliard lineages, their shared bloodline maintaining accord between kingdoms from the time of Adarlan’s creation until less than a half-century ago. The altar is not the only place from which strained relations can be mended but it has proven one of the most resilient, which is why we write to you now — to propose a marriage between Princess Aevanna Galathynius and Crown Prince Gavin IV Havilliard.

It is a matter we don’t take lightly and have discussed at length; please take time to do the same with your own family and councillors. The unification of our Houses will be glorious.

    Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, Queen Regent
    Rowan Whitehorn Galathynius, King Consort"

    Summary

They’ve been here before. Coriolanus cradling Sejanus’s face; Coriolanus close enough to share air; Coriolanus holding all of Sejanus’s broken pieces in some semblance of their original shape, saving his life, saving him from himself. They’ve been here before but something feels different this time, and Sejanus can’t fight the realization that perhaps it’s only because his eyes are finally open.

    “Why?”

Why record his confession in the first place, he's asking, not why delete it, except he knows he doesn’t want the truth about the first question so he lets Coriolanus answer the second.

    -

Coriolanus never sends the jabberjay. Lots of things change, but very few for the better.

    Summary

Already three of her women have complained about the cloaked figure in the corner, frightening would-be patrons away. “If he does not purchase women or drink, send him out,” Elayne scolds, “This is a pleasure house, not a poor house.”

“I cannot," Lyria murmurs, ducking her head close so as not to be overheard. "He is Targaryen.”

That, at last, catches Elayne’s attention.

    Summary

The fight’s clearly gone out of Lysandra but Aedion is just getting started, indignance flaring in his gut at the defeated slump of her shoulders. “She was wrong to do such a thing! There is no lifetime, not one, in which I can fathom asking someone I love to give up so much.” He understands why Lysandra promised to carry out this plan, he understands sacrifice… he doesn’t understand how Aelin could request this of a woman who has never lived her own life.

He’s angry for Lysandra’s sake as much as his own, but knowing it’s not fair to take his frustrations out on Lysandra doesn’t change the fact that she’s here and complicit in this foul plan and willing to rise to the bait when he fights with her. Maybe she, too, needs an outlet for the fear and the anger. Perhaps she just refuses to take abuse lying down.

An apology should not be enough. Aethelstan has betrayed him, banished him, turned his back and closed his mind to Uhtred’s advice and presence and love.

It matters not. Uhtred forgave the young king even before he had the presence of mind to ask for such forgiveness himself.

    Summary

When Scott cups Isaac’s jaw in both hands and leans close, Allison doesn’t feel the jealousy she had been expecting. Isaac is beautiful in the low light, cheekbones casting deep shadows over his face, those brilliant eyes wide and searching. His gaze roves over Scott’s face as though he’s afraid it’s all a dream, that he’ll wake up to the unforgiving shrill of an alarm and have nothing but a memory to hold onto until the next night, and the curve of his parted lips lends him a surprised expression like he can’t believe he’s wanted.

He’s beautiful in a way that makes Allison’s chest ache, like all the pain he’s buried again and again for so long is resurfacing in her heart, rather than his own — it’s a burden she’s happy to carry for the moment, perfectly content to let the warmth and light of Scott’s attention wash over all the dark, hidden corners of his battered body. Isaac deserves this love, deserves this and so much more, and although he often struggles to accept his own happiness when offered the chance, he accepts the soft press of Scott’s lips with ease.

    Summary

When Will finally turns to the window, hand over his mouth like it might keep him from betraying himself, Jonathan is forced to blink back tears on his little brother’s behalf. Will’s never had it easy but this… this should’ve been smooth sailing. Sure, people like Troy Walsh and Lonnie Byers and every intolerant bible-thumper in their backwater town couldn’t make things simple for someone like Will, but this wasn’t them.

This was Mike Wheeler, the same boy who had once fought tooth and nail against the world to find his best friend; now distant and distracted, and everybody but him seemed to realize it.

But Jonathan can’t say anything without outing Will, and his advice would likely be unwanted at the moment, so he only returns his attention to the unending yellow lines, mile after mile swallowed up under the van’s wheels.

    Summary

True excitement is a rare sight on David’s face but the glimmer in his eyes as he raises his reddened hand to his mouth reminds Michael of the only other time he’s seen that expression — the night at the cliff’s edge, when he’d swung at David and he’d taken the blow without a hint of pain. More than anything else, it was that wild look in his eyes that had told Michael this guy wasn’t like the chain smoking, leather-clad rebels he’d known in Phoenix, in high school. They had none of David’s wildness, none of his casual cruelty. They never looked at Michael like he was prey to be devoured.

They would never, not in a thousand years, wrap their lips around a thumb stained with Michael’s blood and suck it off in the most foul display of hedonism he’s ever seen.

    Summary

“I’m not saying jack shit to anyone, Buckley.” Robin looks back up, tilts her head in faux-curiosity.

“About what?” she challenges, mostly in a last ditch attempt to save face, but her pretend denial makes Hargrove’s expression darken. She wonders for a moment if he’d been trying to extend an olive branch, then decides that’s probably not something Billy Hargrove knows how to do.

    Still…

“Why?” The moment the word’s out of her mouth she’s regretting it. Who cares why? He wasn’t going to out her to the entire town and she certainly doesn’t need a reason to appreciate that.

“I get it,” he replies simply.
