Summary
Ivan does not hesitate. Hesitation would be noticed. It would be recorded, remembered, held. Instead, he swallows without chewing. Whatever is biting into his stomach twists there, forcing it into a knotty mess, pushing the swallowed pieces back up his throat. He quashes it anyway, pressing everything down, tamps the reaction flat, and keeps still until the watching eye finds nothing to seize.
( Or, time lingers only in the living: one, once younger, now alone in its quiet passage, while the other rests frozen, unchanging. The insects are absent, and yet the silence speaks. Death itself becomes a record. )

A perforated lung, nicked ribs, pierced small intestine, and a bullet lodged in between two vertebrae. Not good news, but it certainly could be worse. As mortifying as it was, Till couldn't keep himself from watching while members of the rebellion flayed his best friend open in an attempt to save his life.
Some nights, Till hunched over a lit candle and prayed- he’d never prayed before then, but he prayed now, that somehow Ivan could hear him. Most often, he laid awake, dreaming their last moments on stage. The pressure around his neck, the rain on his skin, the iron in the air. As much as he tried to dig the feeling out, it wouldn't leave. The medics were pulling double shifts trying to keep both of their wounds closed.
Patience was never Till's strong suit. He wanted things to be done now, he wanted to talk now. He couldn't talk to a living corpse- at least not the way he wanted.

Ivan wakes up in a grass field full of red flowers. The air is warm and dry, and Ivan breathes it in, the ghost of rain still running down his face and the image of Till’s shocked face smeared in his vision. A beautiful blue sky looms overhead.
On his left, a boy with gray hair lays beside him, fast asleep. Ivan thinks surely even death could not be this cruel. Ivan swallows as he skims his fingers over the boy’s face.
“Till.” He says, too softly for anyone to hear.
Till stirs, his eyelids twitch, but he doesn’t wake.
Ah.
Ivan wonders which part of this is the bad dream.
