At the 118's annual Fourth of July BBQ, Ana is supposed to be keeping an eye on Christopher while Eddie grabs them some food; however her attention is on the fact that Eddie doesn't trust her the way he trusts Buck. With her preoccupied, she doesn't notice Christopher losing his balance until it's too late. Christopher has a little fall and Eddie has some realizations.

When Eddie’s chest starts feeling tight and heavy, he thinks nothing of it.
He thinks “seasonal allergies”, “smoke inhalation”, “just a cold”. Besides, the intermittent ache in his chest seems to fade to the background when he is around Christopher and Buck, smiling and laughing with his two favorite boys. He’s healthy, he’s fine, there’s nothing to worry about.It isn’t until he coughs up the first petal that realization hits.

Eddie recognizes the shirt Buck is wearing instantly. It’s his shirt. He remembers throwing it in the station laundry weeks ago, one of his older ones, soft from the wear. He stares for a couple of minutes
Buck notices. “You good?” he asks. His eyes catch Eddie’s.
Eddie clears his throat. “That my shirt?”
Buck glances down at it. He lifts the hem like he’s checking. “Huh. Guess it is.”
“You guess?”
Buck grins, slow and shameless. “Well, it smelled like you. Thought the universe was telling me something.”
Eddie raises an eyebrow. “Telling you what? To do my laundry?”
“No,” Buck says, and there’s a flicker of something more in his voice.
OR
Eddie thinks there's something off about the way Buck is acting, but can't put his finger on it.

“Wow, Eds. That’s, uh, that’s a lot to take in all at once.” Buck retracted his hand from Eddie’s and used it to scratch the back of his head. Eddie tried to ignore the way his heart sinks into his stomach. “Listen, I—I love you, too. The—the same way. But I just.”“You just what?”
“I just can’t.”
“You…can’t?”
Buck shook his head. “Not like this. I’m so, so sorry, Eddie.”
“No, no. Don’t be.” He stood up so fast that the room spun a little. Or maybe that’s just what it felt like when your world was falling apart. “I, um, I should go. I’ll see you at work, I guess.”

Eddie follows him down the hall. “Talk about what? The fact that I kissed you? Because we can’t just ignore that Buck. Especially if that is why you are running away from me.”
Buck stops and spins so quickly Eddie almost walks straight into. “We really don’t have to talk about it. Ever. It’s fine. I get it.”
Eddie frowns. “I'm glad you get it Buck because I don’t.”
“It was an emotional moment. I was in danger, you haven’t been in an emergency like that for a little while now and I was kind of thrown on you when I got over. I understand how you accidentally kissed me. It was a mistake and that's fine. I’m fine. We are fine.”
Eddie gapes at him. “Buck I-”---
Or Eddie has some realisations when he accidently kisses Buck after saving him, but is thrown off when Buck says he isn't in love with him
