Fuck JKR
Regulus Black is tired. Tired enough that, while interviewing for his dream job he apparently told his interviewer all about his fiancé and child (that he doesn't have). Actually, "told" is the wrong term. "Zoned out and nodded along" is a more fair assessment, really. He was snapped into reality when he started asking more specific questions about his partner. Which, always the compulsive liar and star people-pleaser when he panics, Regulus tells him that the kid being his partner's from a previous relationship and oh, now he's screwed.
James Potter has been a single dad since his fiancée broke off their engagement and disappeared. It's been a year and his friends are trying to convince him to put himself back out there, to date, to meet people, to get laid ffs. James just isn't ready to move on. To get them off his back, he convinces his best friend to stage a bunch of Instagram posts where you can't see his face to try to pass him off as his new boyfriend. Suddenly, his friends want to meet this boy he calls his little star. Problem is, Sirius isn't willing to keep up the charade. Now he has to find someone who looks like Sirius and is also crazy enough to agree to fake date him.

Summary
This is it. The last night Sirius will ever be in the cold, dark, loveless tomb that is 12 Grimauld Place.
Except, it isn't entirely loveless, is it? No, Sirius remembers his baby brother and all the love they've shared, all the little laughter and tiny moments of light they've brought to these haunted halls.
The thought of his baby brother has Sirius pausing, bag halfway lifted to his shoulder.
Sweet little Regulus. The reason he hasn't left thus far. But no, the boy will be okay. He's always been less outspoken, more willing to take the path of least resistance, keeping his head down.
Regulus will be fine in this house. He will be safe. But it couldn't hurt to check on him one last time. The boy is probably already asleep anyway. There's no risk of him realising there's something off—no risk of Regulus trying to stop him
OR What if the night Sirius plans to run away, he goes to check on Regulus one last time, only to find a tiny black kitten where his brother should be?

Summary
James didn't quite know why he had done it. He just knew that Sirius would break if Remus ended their relationship. And Remus would break if he knew Sirius did this to him. So maybe or probably he did it to protect them. After all he hadn't expected to be thrown out of his own dorm room. He hadn't expected Sirius to agree with Remus when throwing James out- knowing that James hadn't done this but Sirius himself. Hadn't expected Peter to quietly stand by also aware of the truth, yet not speaking up for him.

James takes the blame for THE Prank knowing how much more it would hurt Remus to know Sirius did it. After all a boyfriend revealing your biggest secret to your worst enemy would hurt a lot more than one of your best friends doing it. Turns out losing all your friends, your bed, and your ability to eat in the great hall, causes you to get taken in by three hot Slytherins.
