Wylan knew all too well how to play with fire—as a chemist, as a tanner’s apprentice, as his father’s son, he had to be familiar with it—but this was a new kind of risk, leaving his heart exposed on the damp cobblestones to be stomped on. It was idiotic, he knew, to intentionally let himself be wounded in the Barrel. Things tended to get infected here, and people preyed on weakness like sharks.
But he had been alone, been lonely, for so many years, long before he’d emerged from a freezing canal and found himself at the bottom of the Barrel. He needed this, and even if it was going to burn him, even if it was a poorly constructed bomb just waiting to implode, Wylan found that he didn’t much care.
At least he’d have been warm and wanted for one night in his miserable, saintsforsaken life.

“You really didn’t remember what you look like?” Charles asked.
“I fear I’ve already forgotten again," Edwin said.
The admission didn’t sound sad, just factual. So Edwin was being very Edwin about this. It was only natural, then, that Charles became very Charles about it all.
“You have a very straight nose,” Charles said. “And, um, a sort of soft jawline—strong chin, though. Thick brows, and high cheekbones. Your hair is brown, and your eyes are green. You get a little crinkle between your eyebrows whenever you’re doing practically anything.” Charles demonstrated by glowering playfully in Edwin’s direction. “Thinking, reading, telling me off.”

"Charles completely lacked an understanding of personal space. It was constant. An arm around his shoulder shaking him when he’s found a clue, a hand helping him up and brushing him off when one of their rowdier targets knock him down, a hug when a case gets solved— it’s all a tad overwhelming.
No one touched him this much when he was alive. And the things that touched him when he was dead only did so to tear him apart for their own amusement. So this was all new to him. He wasn’t sure how to react to it.
