Summary
She waited for it, the pit in her stomach to roil from her sin of tracing the line of Ava’s jaw with her eyes, it always came. Early mornings, when pink and orange filtered through the corners of their makeshift window curtains, the sunrise glinting off a bit of drool on the corner of Ava’s lip that made her ache; drops of sweat lining her temples after an afternoon training session; all of her smiles and all of her soft, second-nature touches that would send Beatrice to her knees, door locked behind her in their tiny, leaking bathroom, begging for reprieve or repentance…
But this time, it never came.

Summary
Unbound for a second, Beatrice lifts her hand back up. There’s no dirt, no excuse, but she palms Ava’s face again, just to feel it, just for that special close lipped smile that graces Ava’s face again, just for her to sigh.
She removes it quickly—not quickly enough, too quickly—catching Ava’s eyes when they open again.
“Now,” Beatrice says, voice soft and serious. “Let’s try again.”
Ava nods, the halo glows, her feet leave the ground, and she doubles her time.
—
Beatrice realizes that her touch helps Ava with her training, and, well, things escalate.

Summary
The handshake is firm, stark because of calloused fingers.Beatrice does not know what to do then. Her plan was not to come in. Her plan was not even to eat some of the pie.
"Ava," Beatrice repeats, unknowingly building a connection in her brain that will later associate the three letters with the very sweet and decadent taste of the huckleberry and blackberry pie in Beatrice's mouth.
Ava smiles as if she were aware of it.

It is 1983, and Beatrice’s mother is dead set against the new neighbors. Beatrice ought to disagree. Ava Silva is the perfect neighbor - to experiment with.

Summary
So, Beatrice cleared her throat and asked, “Who are you?”
The girl spun around, her hair whipping around her body as she did, performance forgotten. For a moment she just stared at Beatrice with wide brown eyes, mouth half open.
Then she said, “Oh fuck.”
And she completely disappeared, letting the wooden spoon clatter to the floor.
