People come and go throughout the night, flitting in and out in a whirlwind of coffee and hushed voices.
Donna and Sam don’t leave. They remain as the two lone sentries, flitting in and out of various states of shock.
(Donna goes through five cups of bland, room-temperature coffee during those fourteen hours.
Fourteen hours, and all Donna can do is toy with a thread on her jeans. There’s a hole in the knee, denim frayed and faded.
She felt like that thread— taut and worn, very near the breaking point.)
