Summary
Robert had started letting a switch flip in his mind, when the bullying, the torment would begin - it had been the only way he’d known to cope, at the beginning.
The switch kept flipping, though, and Robert kept letting it – when Kev would touch him, hold him, whisper all kinds of sweet nothings to him in that frenzied, gruff way he tended to, Robert would find his brain slipping into that blissful nothing, his body present, but his mind somewhere else entirely.

Aaron felt like the human manifestation of a migraine. Vic looked as though she understood. “Right – so Robert is alone, in Whitby, with a mentally unstable gangster that’s got a jealous streak about a mile wide, who now knows his husband is cheating on him, and Robert has no idea how much danger he’s in?”
Vic winced. “That’s about it, yeah.”
Kev finds out about Robert and Aaron. Aaron and Vic go to Whitby to save the day.

Summary
Robert couldn’t tell you exactly when he stopped talking. He could tell you why he did, though - two charges of attempted murder, a stint in prison, and the fact no one believed it wasn't him. Selective mutism, was what the prison doctor diagnosed, after a few sessions where Robert had sat there, silent, unable to bring himself to say anything. It can be a result of trauma – PTSD, the doctor had suggested. The only cure was time, and therapy.

They’d been back together for six months, and sometimes, Robert still woke up in disbelief that this was his life again – that he woke up next to Aaron every morning, that he had the love of his life back. It hadn’t been easy, but at the same time, it had been the easiest thing in the world, to chose each other, consequences bedamned, because that had always been the way they’d chosen each other; regardless of what anyone else said, or did, or thought.
