Summary
They are told only untainted love can elevate them to the Purelands, out of this hell; but love can never end well, Robert's sure of that. If watching it destroy his family wasn't enough proof, he himself has been the downfall of countless others. As a lure, he can take the form of a person's deepest desires, make them fall in love, use it to destroy them. He does what he has to, to survive in this city, with the powers he's been given; he's never understood the weakness of those who fall, who give in to that person they can't stay away from, jeopardise themselves.
Out in the backlands, trying to survive the repressive regime, Aaron knows he just needs to keep his head down, keep working and keep himself safe so he can be there to protect his sister. He knows he must ignore the hunger for love that keeps growing inside him or he'll risk everything; and ignore it is exactly what he intends to keep doing.
When Robert is sent back to his childhood village with the intention of condemning another unsuspecting soul, will either of them be able to do what they know they must to survive?

“You’re pathetic mate!”
I shouldn’t be surprised because everyone in my life has tried to tear me down in some form. I was everyone’s favorite pushing bag. But I never expected it from him or maybe I just wanted to ignore the signs. I set up this image of the perfect villain, the best fall guy and there is nothing that people want more than someone they could blame. Someone that would make them feel like they were better than they truly were to feel like a good person.
As I watched the love of my life walk away I wondered if there was more to my life than being the villain to everyone’s story. I just wanted to be happy but I guess I was too desperate for it. A part of me was angry at the younger man, it screamed that no matter how much I berated and tried to hurt him, I never did it in public. I never humiliated him so publicly that even the people that hated him winced in pity. At that moment I didn’t want a reconciliation, I just wished that I could forget everything and everyone, especially him.
“Please someone, anyone, throw this feeling that drives me crazy into the fire, let it all burn to ashes and take away this crushing pain. Please lend me a hand because I want to forget.”

“Mornin’ Rob,” she says brightly, before walking her way across the room and pulling out the chair beside him to take a seat. She clocks the notebook before he can react and picks it up before he can stop her. “Oh what’s this then?”
“It’s nothin’,” he snaps and reaches out to try and grab it from her. Vic leans back quickly in her seat and holds it to the side and out of his reach.
“Uh, doesn’t seem like nothin’ does it?” She says knowingly, her eyebrow raised as she scans her eyes over his face. He sighs and falls back into his seat, knowing now that Vic would be like a dog with a bone until she got it out of him.

Aaron wakes up before his alarm, but for once he’s thankful for it. He blinks into full wakefulness and then rolls over to take advantage of the few minutes when Robert’s still asleep, stares at him. At his fiancé. Even just thinking the word brings a smile to his face, a smile that grows wider when Robert shifts a little and the duvet falls to uncover his left hand, engagement ring sitting there, loud and proud.
They both have the day off, and Chas, Liv, Charity and Noah are all headed off to a Christmas fair in Manchester, and Aaron has plans. Plans that involve Robert in this bed for another hour, at least, followed by a fry up that Aaron specifically got all his favourites for. Then they’ll curl up on the couch and watch the Muppets’ Christmas Carol, because Robert’s been dying to show him, and then they’ll go back to bed for a bit. They should have enough time for lunch and a quiet pint together in the Woolie before the rabble get back.

“Wait,” Robert says, suddenly remembering. “You were in my dream last night!”
Aaron is caught off guard, apparently. He seems surprised for about two seconds, then scoffs and crosses his arms.
“Seriously?” He raises an eyebrow. “That’s the best pickup line you can come up with?”
Robert glares at him.
“You were there,” he insists. He knows it doesn’t make sense, but he can make people do things they don’t wanna do. Nothing has exactly made sense in his life since he was fourteen.
Aaron sighs, and his arms fall next to him in surrender.
“Fine. I was,” he admits.
But how?
“I’m a dreamwalker,” he answers before Robert can even ask, and a second later, it’s him who is glaring. “Hang on a second. What did you do to me?” he exclaims, and he’s angry.
“Me? You’re the one who got inside my dream!”
“And you got inside my head just now!” Aaron accuses him. “What are you, a mind controller?”
And well. If Robert knew how to answer that question, maybe he would. He’s never known, though, but he also doesn’t like to admit that.
“Let’s just say, I don’t need to be asleep to do it,” he says, vaguely. -

Robert’s not convinced he even has a set direction in mind, until he's practically falling into a seated position at the bus stop and letting his trembling fingers trace the intricate carved loops of Liv's name on the memorial plaque that's on the bench there.
He presses his thumb into the engraving until there's a red indentation left behind on his skin, but it doesn't hurt as much as he wishes it would.
