That softens something behind your ribs. “Can you give me fifteen?”
“Of course.”
You hang up and immediately turn toward the hallway mirror.
And freeze.
The bangs. Right.
You’d cut them in solidarity while Tara was hunched over her sink, box dye staining her ears, swearing she’d erase all traces of Garrett’s existence by the time the color set. You hadn’t wanted to dye yours—too much protocol at work—but you’d grabbed the scissors anyway.
(In which Tara has the worst ex known to man, terrible hair decisions are made sometime between Friday night and the crack of dawn on Saturday, and it all somehow circles around to emotional honesty the noon after.)

It’s slim, matte black, smooth as glass. No name—only a discrete line of numbers and a silver sigil in the corner: a crow in flight, wings outstretched.
“You’re giving me your credit card?” you ask, startled enough to laugh.
He doesn’t laugh back.
