Summary
Never mind the next two weeks, the next eight hours stretched endlessly in front of him. He had no idea how to occupy his time. His house was basically empty, which sounded sad but was really a good thing, evidence he’d built himself the life he wanted – where he always had something to do, outside and with other people. Ilya had been restless for as long as he could remember, had never been able to sit still. He’d gotten in trouble for it as a kid at the dinner table and he got in trouble for it as a full grown man on the team bus. He’d gotten in trouble for it when the doctors had been trying to take the x-ray, his leg jumping without his permission.
Ilya gets injured, stops leaving the house, loses his mind, learns to read tarot, and sends Shane Hollander a lot of photos.

His mom, for example. He didn’t think much about his mom. It wasn’t the same as forgetting her, because she was always there, always, on the edge of his vision. He just never looked directly at her. The tarot cards were proof of that, how easy it was to act as though she wasn’t at the center of it all. But so much of why he was attached to them was because of her, because of how certain he was she’d have loved them, the way she had loved that book she’d read to him from as a kid. She’d have loved the creativity, the reflection, the suggestion of something greater than reality. It happened sometimes, him finding something he knew with unfailing certainty that he’d bring to her if she was still alive. Almost always it was something he loved, too.

“How should we expect this night to go?” The reporter was hyped up. Ilya couldn’t blame them; the rivalry between Ottawa and Toronto was as new as it was personal. There was no shortage of stories to write, and they all knew it.
So Ilya shrugged when he answered. “We will see. Perhaps a visit to the penalty box–” he smirked. “My vacation home.” Ilya liked to tell reporters that the Toronto penalty box was becoming his vacation home. He liked saying it; Centaurs’ fans liked him saying it; the Toronto fans loathed it, too. Win-win-win.
