Steve and Wanda do eat here almost every single day, sure. But so do a lot of other people in Stark’s Hollow, and while Natasha is generally observant, if she was pressed on the subject, she’d have no idea what foreign language the Parker kid is taking, or how the radiator in Miss Agatha’s car is holding up, or exactly how many dogs Thor actually owns now.

“You love her a lot.” Steve says it like it’s simple, and sometimes, Natasha doesn’t know why it can’t be. She does love Yelena – she loves Yelena ferociously. Her sparkplug little sister, irreverent and fearless, who has never given even half a shit about what anyone thinks of her. When she was four, she fell running on a gravel road and scraped her knees to bloody ribbons – and when she saw how badly she’d hurt herself, muttered “Gross,” and jumped back up to keep playing. When she was six and a teacher corrected her that having different daddies meant Natasha was only her half-sister, Yelena bit her on the arm and refused to apologize.
The thing that burns Natasha most is that she remembers a time when her family was happy – or at least, when things were easier.
[AU. Natasha's a hotshot Hollywood producer with a truckload of childhood issues. When their father gets out of prison, Yelena asks her to come spend Christmas with the family for the first time in a decade. She drags Steve Rogers, who she's casually banging, along to be her buffer. The author desperately wanted Steve to interact with the Russian Chaos Family and canon has broken her heart too much, so this happened instead.]

Summary
They never should have fallen in love; Natasha had known from the beginning what a bad match they were. He’s too earnest by half, always willing to get his hands dirty but never relishing the prospect, and when he and Tony first started working together – well, Steve has a wild streak in him, a need to prove something, plus a love for the craft, but it was also because he had needed the money too badly to let his better angels shout down his demons. His mother was sick, his student loans were paralyzing, and by the time his mother had died and he could buy a Brooklyn brownstone with cash, loyalty had set in. He was always there to be sure that if they skirted legality, they never ruined anyone’s life and they never left a trace.
Natasha does this because she likes it and she’s good at it. For her, it’s never been complicated.

There are about seventeen different platforms available for video calls, but since no one could agree on which was the best, Okoye went full-general and finally made a declaration: all group calls will be done via Google meets, everyone will use a computer and stay seated for the duration of the conversation, and no one will snack on anything crunchy or slurpy. “No more multitasking,” she ordered. “We’re gonna focus and be present for each other.”
Months later, when they’ve been having these calls for far longer than anyone expected, Natasha’s sort of glad they put a formal structure in place. Anytime she’s had spurts of annoyance, she’s self-aware enough to know that the root cause is she’s sick of video calls, period – they’re weirdly draining, in a way she never would have expected. But it’s also the only time she gets to see anyone besides Clint, James, and randoms when it’s her turn to hit the grocery store; it’s this or nothing. She misses her friends.
[A one-shot in the runaways are running the nightverse: Natasha, Nakia, Okoye, Jessica Jones, and Valkyrie are an all-girl rock band; Natasha, Clint, and Bucky are in a relationship, and now everyone's in quarantine, making the best of it.]

Natasha is eye-catching even in her misery and her rage; it’s a gift, to be so naturally noticeable and still be able to make herself disappear.
And she can devastate Steve with a single look. Natasha won’t let him plead to her, so in the quiet of their bedroom at night, he pleads to Peggy because it needs to spill out somewhere: what was I supposed to do, Peg, was I supposed to leave her on Vormir like some broken piece of space trash? Was I supposed to live knowing I’d let her die? Was I supposed to leave her to wake up stranded on some other planet with no way to get home? What else should I have done but bring her with me?
Peggy has no answers for him. She wishes she did.

Clint did like that the photo stayed private. He’s shit at social media, only on it because, you know, he has to be, but even Clint knew it was the kind of candid that was Instagrammable - #queen, #legend, #rawmemama, etcetera, ad nauseam, he’s pretty sure he could predict the comments before anyone actually typed them. (Bucky once said “raw me, mama?” to her with a goddamn straight face and Natasha’s expression of abject horror while she tried to work out if he meant it had made Clint laugh so fucking hard he was certain he’d ripped an organ in half. He still wants to find a way to work that story into his act, because on the one hand, people love it when he talks about his marriage, but it’s hard to find a way into it that doesn’t sound like he’s making fun of their fans, and that’s a big no-go.)
[AU: Natasha, Nakia, Okoye, Jessica Jones, and Valkyrie are the War Dogs: an all-girl rock band navigating their sudden explosion of hard-won success. Clint is a stand-up comedian - fine, Clint is John Mulaney. Bucky works security. Come for feelings about found family and fame, stay for the lesbian wedding and unnecessary dig at John Mayer. This premise escalated. The author regrets nothing.]

It’s a fear they’ve all been left with, this idea of a second wave. Thanos as the boogeyman in the night, deciding fifty wasn’t enough and now he’s coming back for seventy-five, and it still makes Natasha roll out of bed to see for herself. Steve’s there in the bathroom, though, right where he should be, even if the adrenaline singing through her blood doesn’t register it right away. There’s a towel knotted around his waist, hair slicked back and shoulders beaded with water, and he’s staring at himself in the mirror, a little forlorn.
“Steve,” she says, quietly.
He doesn’t turn to look at her. “I was thinking it’s time to kill the beard.”

Steve holds such undeniable power. One rousing speech over a loudspeaker and SHIELD had promptly started to rip itself into pieces with no evidence, on nothing more than the Captain’s say-so. Sam, out of the military – very possibly with an adrenaline itch that still needed scratching, but still – and willingly throwing himself back into the line of fire and potentially on the wrong side of the law because Steve was the one who had asked. Seventy years of propaganda and politics, sleeping under the ice while he was built into something greater than any one man could ever be and it’s a power that he wields clumsily, sometimes, but he has always, always been aware of its existence and he’s tried – oh, Natasha knows how hard he has tried – to live up to it, to deserve the faith people hand him before he himself has actually earned it.
And here at the end, all of it has been good for nothing.
