Summary
She remembers the time she found a baby bird back in Boston, holding its fragile body in her palms after rescuing it from the dormitory roof. It was a tiny thing, delicate, all hollow bones and downy brown feathers. The realization that the fragile life in her hands could be so easily crushed had been almost overwhelming.
Joel holds onto her a little like she had that bird: careful, cautious. Like she’s broken a wing and he’ll keep her safe until she’s ready to fly on her own again.

Summary
It's another one of what Joel refers to as her bad days, when he gives vague, hushed excuses for why she can’t go to school, can’t go down to the pond when the others her age invite her, can’t force herself to choke down the venison they serve in the dining hall.
Ellie’s not sure how to tell him that lately, nearly all of her days have been bad.

Summary
But Ellie wants to tell him about this. She wants to just be a normal kid who tells her parent, guardian—whatever exactly it is that Joel is to her—about crushes and first dates, all of the overly complicated drama that always exists as a byproduct of teenage relationships. She just doesn’t want him to see her differently. Doesn’t want this to be the thing that finally makes him leave.

Summary
“I was starting to think you weren’t gonna wake up,” he says after another beat of silence. It’s oddly vulnerable, something raw and genuine in his voice that she’s never heard from him before.
“Yeah, well, getting rid of dead bodies is, like, your specialty, right?” Daisy keeps her tone light, so he knows she’s joking, and there it is: a smile, the briefest flash of it, a sliver of pale teeth before Robbie turns away, shaking his head. His freckles move with it, pulled up by the draw of his lips.
“Glad to see you didn’t lose your sense of humor with all that blood.” Sarcastic as it is, some part of her thinks he really is.

Summary
Tommy watched his brother bury his soul with his daughter, cradled in the roots of a tall, looming oak tree on the side of Route 71. The man who woke up in the military hospital two days later was a ghost of the one that Tommy’d known his whole life. Like when he tried to put that bullet in his head, he really had died, and he’d come back wrong.
Somehow, this girl’s brought his brother back to him. Has reshaped broken pieces into something similar enough to who Joel used to be that if Tommy ignores the jagged edges, he nearly looks the same. By some miracle, Ellie has taken him by the hand and led him out of the hell he’d stayed trapped in for twenty years.
That's why, when Joel asks Tommy to take her, he knows he's going to agree before he can even think about it.
(tommy's the one who takes ellie to the university)

Summary
It hurts to think about. A real, physical pain, like inhaling broken glass. Like drowning, kind of. Ellie knows how it feels to drown. That burning ache in her chest, near-frantic need to breathe, but it’s not air her body's searching for, it’s Riley, and Riley, she reminds herself, is never, ever coming back.

Summary
Ellie looks at him again, taking in the injured leg, his pallid face. There's a dead man on the ground to her left, a bloodied kitchen knife tossed on the counter beside them, pulled from Joel's flesh and left out for when they finished the job.
“They fucking stabbed you,” the anger’s back in full force, but there’s no one left for her to take it out on. No one else that she can kill.

Summary
She goes through the motions of life, doing just enough to get by, but never fully present. Joel looks at her like the old Ellie is still there, like she didn’t burn to death on her back in a steakhouse in Colorado. He packs her lunch for school and holds her when she can’t stifle her screams fast enough, when the nightmares leave her sobbing so hard she thinks her chest might crack open with the weight of it all. He tries to teach her guitar, but she tells him she’s tired, or she has homework, or maybe later, Joel, and the boggle game and DVDs he saves to watch with her collect dust on the coffee table as she feels herself slip away.
