He still sleeps with that quilt. It still smells like her—light, a little floral. Sooner or later it won’t reach his feet. Sometimes light catches the embroidery needles on his nightstand just right—they’ll glint—and the needle pricks his finger as it slides out. Doesn’t quite draw blood. Still stings as he pulls the edge towards him.
It’s not the play at pain that draws him to it. Not entirely the commitment to his mother, either. No, it’s some crude curiosity—or compulsion, as it were. Forcing his hand. This isn’t what a son does; this is women’s work. This isn’t what a son does. This has nothing to do with avenging his father or his mother.
The needles disappear from his nightstand. So do her projects. Tucked away somewhere in some corner of a closet. It’s not what a son does. It’s not what he needs to do.
