    Amanda lifted a shoulder. "In my experience, scientists appreciate intelligence and will forgive a great many sins if you have enough of it. I can hold my own in their conversations, and I bring a great deal of knowledge to the table. So they are willing to overlook the unfortunate fact of my gender."

    "And perhaps someday you'll save the world."

    "Perhaps," she conceded, because it was true, in a certain manner of speaking. "But, then, so might you someday."
