Summary
For Kokichi, who is afraid of heights, that sounds more or less… bone-deep terrifying, but it’ll be worth it to see Rantaro happy. The guy’s such a thrillseeker, even if he acts too nonchalant to seem like it. “The whole point of amusement parks are the rides, Taro! We gotta get on!”
Kokichi doesn’t miss the way Rantaro’s eyes widen as he looks over the attraction, and it might be a trick of the light but Kokichi thinks that Rantaro’s pupils also dilate. Cute. The look quickly disappears however as he turns to look down at Kokichi, his brow creasing.
“Are you sure you don’t want to try something more low-key? I think I saw a carousel over there.”
“Hey!” Kokichi puffs his cheeks out. He forgot that he told Rantaro about his fear of heights already—he does like trusting Rantaro, Rantaro’s definitely earned it and all, but even still… How annoying that he can’t just treat his beloved without being reminded of himself! “Did I say wanted to ride a carousel? I hate having a minion who talks back, you know!”

Upon learning that Rantaro likes roller coasters, Kokichi takes it upon himself to give his boyfriend a day of fun.

"Villain or no, you're pretty interesting, Ouma-kun. We should hang out more sometime," Rantaro suggests.
And, oh, Rantaro's so close, is the thing. His smile really is so handsome, and the crinkles in the corners of his eyes really do look so charming. But Kokichi can see what other people can't: he can see the strings pulling up the corners of Rantaro's mouth, the threaded hooks pulling his eyes into the perfect facsimile of genuine friendliness. It's so close to normal, but the sliver of a gap between Rantaro and normal upsets the whole thing, like a single hair ruins a whole bowl of soup.
Kokichi's fascinated. He needs to study this man.

“Kokichi,” Rantaro says. He turns to face his friend. “We’ll rest tonight, but tomorrow we’ll hike back. I’m calling this lead a dead end.”
“Are you sure?” Kokichi’s brow furrows. “If it was Mina or Kikuko—”
“If it was one of them, then,” Rantaro inhales, “then I know they’re alive, and I can come back here later.” Though the idea of Kikuko coming back to a forest trail like this after her fall in the Philippines so many years ago… is baffling. Why would she? “But if this is a trap, I’m not going to risk your life by walking further into it. I’d rather come back on my own than—”
Kokichi gasps, eyes going uncharacteristically wide with an emotion Rantaro doesn’t recognise on him. “Rantaro, look out!”
