    Summary

Cities are full of bright lights and shadows alike. Those that live in the light, the heroes, the 'good guys.' Those that live in the shadows, their grisly work only illuminated when the sun deigns to show its face again. Sometimes the shadows are too deep. Sometimes the spotlights are too much.

The Prince, Roman Prince, is the Golden Boy of the city. The newsreels, the cameras, the public adore him. But they don't see the winces when the bulbs go off right in his face, or whispers to be better, do better, perform better from the people that pull him aside after every daring adventure.

No one knows the name Janus, but they know his work. They don't shout, they whisper. They huddle together in the dark, searching for the light so as not to get caught in his coils.

But sometimes, when spotlights are too bright and shadows too flat, a little prince will make its way into the snake's den.

Janus Declan is a prodigy; the youngest squire to be knighted in almost three decades. The personal knight to Prince Roman. Many boast that he has no more to learn, that he was almost born with the sword as part of his arm.

Janus has no ears for the boasts, however, not when he's preoccupied with the whispers and silences that follow the Spymaster.

    And him.

This is the worst part, honestly. It's not the frantic churning in his gut when he uses his magic, it's not the icy dread of what happens right after when he's trying frantically to avoid suspicion, it's not even the looks he gets when there's a few too many knights looking at him.

It's when they're back in the safety of Janus's chambers and Janus is swanning around like he's the one that saved the day, and he takes the opportunity to get as many insults into Virgil as he can.

When the nearby kingdom falls to ruin by corrupt officials taking advantage of their own monarch’s ailing health, it is only natural that Logan should suggest that the King and Queen take in the royal child while the kingdom is sorted out. After all, there is no place for a child in the hotbeds of greedy nobles, and this had been the one place he had known before his life changed irrevocably.

    Summary

For a moment Janus wondered if he could count on the other Sides noticing his absence, but he dismissed it a second later. The other Sides’ teamwork was nothing to write home about when they were deliberating over dinner; who knew how long a rescue would take, if Patton could even muster them for an attempt.

Patton was the only one who’d give Janus the time of day, and he was paying for it with Logan and Roman’s half-protective scorn.

Janus had to find a way to fix that, and soon. Virgil was set against him, Logan too hurt to listen with an open mind, but perhaps if Janus could find a crack in Roman’s resolve, make him soften a little so the others would follow—

“What in Aphrodite’s name,” someone— a very familiar someone— muttered, and Janus froze in surprise. “Is that a— oh.” His voice went flat. “Deceit. I suppose I should be surprised you didn’t manage to slither out of this, too. Is it frightening, being confronted by the consequences of your own actions? I can’t imagine it’s ever happened before.”

    febuwhump day 1: mind control

"Bet if Deceit saw you like this, he'd join right in," Hubris says. "He won't take pity on you forever, you know. He doesn't care about the rest of us—why would he care about you? You're a nuisance at best. A disease."

    Virgil doesn't flinch at that.

    He doesn't.

    Summary

There’s a curled up figure in a crater at the pier. Not close enough for magma to come rushing in, thankfully, but enough that Janus can see molten rock lapping lazily at the crater’s edges, cooling into seeping gray striations. Much closer, and the angel will burn up like paraffin.

The figure has his head in his hands, white wings slumped behind him. His feathers are still well-formed, ash-choked as they are, but Janus senses agony in his grace. “Knock knock,” he calls, mantling his wings to look less threatening. The fallen angel doesn’t rise. Janus swallows his fear and adds, “Common etiquette rules that you’re supposed to say who’s there.”

“I know how knock-knock jokes work,” the exile says, voice higher than Janus expected. “They’ve opened a lot of doors for me in the past.”

    Day 14: Branding

    *

The real Virgil is asleep, or ensconced enough in his room that he won’t be coming out either way. Janus’s version of him slips through the Dark Side like the shadow of a cloud, wandering farther through the Dark Side’s labyrinth of recursive apartments until he senses the presence of another Side.

Janus sits on the couch and brings his legs up to his chest. He closes his eyes and breathes, slow like Virgil after a panic attack, doing his best to paint a vulnerable picture.

Virgil is alone, it says. He's unguarded, already nervous, the perfect target.

The best part of any trap is setting the bait.

He also lies more. He lies and lies and lies.

He lies that he’s as cold and vicious as people say, because solitude is better than being prey. He lies that his name is based off of his middle name - he doesn’t even have one - because people rarely call him what he tells them to unless there’s a reason that can be put down on an official document. He lies and feigns indifference, because he’s done with being bullied for that kid who likes poetry and theater and philosophers older than grandparents.

He lies and lies and lies and lies until no one knows what is true.

He lies that he doesn’t care to meet his soulmates. That’s the biggest lie of them all.

Because despite his cynicism and pessimism and everything else in between, he can’t help but hope that when he meets his soulmates, they’ll take him away from all the lies.

He does wonder sometimes, though, if he’s lying to himself by even considering that a possibility.

After all, who could love a liar?

Virgil has done just fine without a soulmate--in fact, he's got issues with the whole concept in general. Then he meets his soulmate, immediately runs, and is left wondering whether he should go back and give the guy a second chance.

He shouldn't. Of course he shouldn't. He's better off ignoring the guy for the rest of eternity and getting on with his life.

But Janus is still waiting for him.

Janus blinks. “You’re sick,” he says. “Someone needs to make sure you don’t die in here.”

Well, yes, Roman has gathered that much. But that doesn’t answer his real question: why is Janus the one doing it?

When Thomas experiences creative burn-out, he struggles with a few days of unproductivity. When Roman experiences creative burn-out, he gets sick. And it's fine, really; he'll suffer through it if it means that he can come up with ideas for Thomas. That's all that matters, right?

Luckily, there are others who disagree with him.

Roman tilts his head to look up at the sky. Appropriately, it’s raining, a steady grey drizzle. If Janus were here, he would make a characteristically mocking comment about cliches and the lack of originality of black umbrellas at a funeral. But then, if Janus were here, they wouldn’t be having a funeral, so it’s a moot point.

He is Janus when he is alone, but only when he is not someone else.

Janus has never minded the fact that his identity is fluid, ever-changing. He acts as whoever Thomas needs him to be in the moment, and if that means he doesn't know much about himself as an individual, well. It's never been a problem for him.

When Deceit is finally captured, the world holds its breath as the trial for the supervillain ends with...a compromise.

No ordinary prison can hold the slipperiest convict in history, so instead, he'll be transferred to the heroes' complex for rehabilitation. For Virgil, a hero who fought Deceit many times and spent far too long in his captivity, being assigned as his primary care supervisor is...far from ideal.

These things take time, after all. Time that has to be willingly spent. The two of them walk the slow path as Janus figures out where to go from here.

"Oh shit,” Remus says. “They’re very good.”

“Huh?” Roman says, but before Remus can clarify, he turns around and slams into Dee. The stranger is grinning at him, looking up with those dazzling green eyes and his earrings danglingly distracting. Roman’s breath catches in his throat at the sudden proximity again, his tongue scrambling for some combination of words that would be smooth and witty and not at all embarrassing but all he’s thinking about is finding out what Dee’s saliva taste like.

He completely misses the small mechanical box Dee jams into his gut.

“Thank you!” Dee says with a crimson smile and that’s really all the warning he gets before he clicks the trigger and 1,200 volts arc through Roman’s body.

Janus laughs, because of course he does. Because he’s an asshole and a bastard and a criminal and everything Virgil hates. "I would never waste your time like that!"

And then he turns around, fully, casually, smoothly, and Time itself stops entirely.

Because it’s Janus. At the end of it all, it’s still Janus. His blond hair is still gelled back in that ridiculous hairstyle he decided on in high school with a whole two strands of hair free to bounce over his forehead, his eyes are still dual colored and sparkling like cider and there are still crinkles by them from the way he’s perpetually laughing at an inside joke, his lips are still thin and pink and inviting, hiding his picture-perfect politician’s smile.

Virgil’s traitorous heart still jumps right into his throat.

“Aw, did you miss me?” Janus asks, “Darling.”
