“You are not fine, Ody. You need to rest. We all do, and sailing’s draining us all. My arm is killing me.”
At that, Odysseus gave a little huff of a laugh. Weak, yes, but precious nonetheless coming from him. “We don’t know what we’re getting into. We could get ourselves killed.”
“Or we could eat well for the first time in a decade and leave the sailing ‘til tomorrow. When was the last time you ate fruit, hm? I for one would kill for a fig.” Odysseus made a noise akin to a whine, and Polites knew he had him. War-hardened, power-weary Odysseus did not say maybe when he meant no. “Honey-sweet,” Polites went on, grinning now, “with flesh soft as a woman’s.”
“Mhm,” Odysseus hummed, defeated.
“Mhm,” Polites confirmed. “I’m sure we could find enough to feed the entire crew here, and then some. Maybe some rabbits, too.” He squeezed Odysseus’ shoulders, leaning in to find his eyes where they had dropped to the floor. “One night,” he said. “We all sleep well and sing songs and take food with us for the journey.”
A beat. Odysseus lifted his head to meet his eyes, at once exasperated and wonderfully fond. There he was. “One night."
