Summary
It’s dim inside, faint morning light coming from the barely slitted blinds.
She sees them right away. Ilya is slumped over another man in bed, fingers combing gently through his hair while their mouths slide together. It’s a slow, sweet kiss. Not a precursor to sex. Sympathy clenches in her chest.
Oh. She shouldn’t be watching this.

Summary
Shane does not pull away, does not speak, does not kiss him again, just holds him like it is easier than letting him go, rocking them slowly back and forth on the edge of the mattress. There is a damp patch on his very nice new shirt where Ilya has failed to swallow back his tears, but he is cradling Ilya to him, anyway, like it doesn’t matter. Like it costs him nothing to do it.
Nobody has touched Ilya this way in a very, very long time. He had forgotten that it was possible to be handled with care—to be treated like a breakable object, instead of a broken one.OR: What happened in the hotel room after the Tampa Bay All-Stars Game.

Summary
Shane forgets to bring condoms to a hookup with Ilya, and proceeds to make some questionable choices about that. Probably he'll feel great about it in the morning, right?
OR:
“Don’t do that,” Shane sighs. “It’s cold out, and late. And someone’s probably going to recognize you. Fuck, it’s just…” He scrunches his face, trying not to vent exactly how upset this is making him. Trying not to imagine an alluring and easy solution.
“Okay. Well,” Ilya says, and for once he sounds a bit uncertain of himself. “Do you want me to go get them, or do we do other stuff?”
Shane flops back on the crummy hotel mattress and throws an arm across his eyes. He doesn’t want to look at Ilya, and maybe it will obscure the needy expression he’s definitely making. “Let’s just do it, anyways,” he mumbles.

Summary
Svetlana could give Ilya everything Shane could not.
She shared his language, his culture, and knew what it was like living in Russia–she didn’t have to try and learn Russian in secret so if Ilya wanted to just talk freely with her he could. She’d known Ilya his whole life, known his father and brother and, most importantly, his mother–the most precious person to Ilya. She could date Ilya, in public, and it wouldn’t cause a scandal–Ilya wouldn’t have to sacrifice his country to be with her or have to secure citizenship somewhere safe just so that if people found out he wouldn’t get arrested. She could stay with Ilya during the hockey season and share his space–she could get groceries with him and argue with him in the produce aisle about what to make for dinner that week. She could love Ilya, freely, and Shane could not.
In the end it was not about Ilya or even Svetlana at all really. It was about what Shane could not be, what he could not give, to the person he loved most.
OR: Shane and Svetlana meet for the first time and Shane battles with his insecurities.
