"My hands itched to reach out to her, and bring her to me. Instead, I kept my scarred thumbs tucked into my belt. I would not be like Lucien, a lovesick puppy to be pushed aside. She moved now, walking soundlessly towards me. I looked up, but her eyes never met mine. She padded past me, barefoot and wearing only a thin night dress. I saw her struggle slightly with the heavy balcony door. Alarm suddenly gripped me as she strode with purpose to the edge.
Before anyone else could rise, I was on the balcony with her, my wings flared for stability from the strong winds. She had by this time swung her legs over to sit on the very rail. She looked back at me now, her hair whipping wildly around her face. I saw for the first time a hint of color in her cheeks, accompanied by what I feared was a light of madness in her eyes."
