Curly doesn't move his gaze from the swaths of towering xenoflora — it was almost like a forest, with sapling-thin stone pillars grown over by pink, fluffy ivy. "I'll need to let the others know about the possible delays," Curly thinks out loud. Without looking, he can feel Jimmy's glare. "Would you give it a rest already and just relax?" he asks incredulously.

Then Jimmy laughs. It's uncertain at first, like a trickle before a deluge, before it all comes out. Then Curly and Jimmy are laughing together again. It's not funny because his radiator is probably cracked now and he hates asking his parents for money. It's incredulous. Curly should have known better to watch for wildlife out here. Maybe it's a little funny. It's bad luck.
Curly falls back in his seat with a shotgunned huff and puts his face in his hands. That little noosphere that Curly and Jimmy shares sees the shitty radio station switched off without Curly even reaching for it. The wind beats against the vehicle, louder now without the music.
"I think you hit a fucking deer. Dixon or Cupid, maybe."

Jimmy hears a cry from beyond the cockpit door. His mind blanks, devoid of thought, only the primitive urge of his amygdala telling him to get the fuck out. He doesn't want to open it. He doesn't want to fucking open it. He rolls onto his back like a petulant child. He has to open it. He fucked up. He fucked up. I fucked up. The words beat on the inside of his skull like a mantra. Jimmy manages to pick himself up off the floor, feeling more like a fish on a line than a man.

That's right. Curly was already home. He takes a long minute to answer, and when he does, his tongue clicks against his teeth. "You ever think about time dilation? How time moves slower in dead zones?"
"It's negligible by the microseconds. We're not cruising on an event horizon." As he spun, Jimmy's dark hair blew over his face like brush in the wind. Curly watched him with tepid amusement. If Jimmy didn't have his ass in the cockpit when he took the stimulants, he had a hell of a time pinning his focus on something useful. They'd learned that the hard way, because the first time, Jimmy did most of what he's doing now.

Curly stared at him for a moment, eyes wide enough to see the white circling his blue iris. Curly was reeling his temper back in. That clenched fist at his side spoke of his urge to strike out, but it went slack. he was a good captain like that, able to control himself. Jim hated it.
Curly wet his lips, then continued. Carefully. "You need to make an effort to work harmoniously with your crew. Just have some... have some patience."
"Okay. Got it." Three words, pop pop pop. Jimmy turned to leave again.
