    Jean closed the remaining distance in answer. At first, Jeremy’s lips were soft with surprise. Then his tongue pushed into Jean’s mouth like an act of ownership.

    Jean knew what it was to submit; he’d been forced to do so against his will plenty. This was the first time he wanted to do it intentionally.

    Ironically, it wasn’t nightmares that forced him to lay in bed for ten minutes, unable to do anything but stare at the wall and piece himself back together. It was the dreams that were close enough to reality to be painfully familiar, yet different enough to rattle his bones: dreams where Thea would step protectively in front of him, where Nathaniel was at his side to share the suffering, where Kevin would hold his clammy hands and stand up to Riko.

    And in the aftermath, he was left lying on his bed in his sad little apartment, where he had to swallow all his anger and grief for a different life and go on about his day.
