Summary
When Suzanne tasked Beatrice with making the guest house handicap accessible for the new bookkeeper coming to Cat's Cradle Ranch in a few weeks, she was expecting someone much older - someone who wouldn't get in her way. Someone she could maybe share a few good books with.
What she didn't expect was for the beautiful and vibrant Ava Silva to roll out of the van that day and completely change her life.

Summary
Firefighters know the importance of good water pressure. Or, at least, that's what Ava would tell the crew when they asked why she always took a shower at the station.
The water pressure at Ava's apartment was shit, and the station always had hot water. So, every night, every morning, and sometimes, randomly in the middle of the day, Ava would take full advantage of the facilities.
Except that wasn't the whole truth. They really were great showers, sure, but the real reason Ava carefully planned every time she showered was what Ava was doing right now.
Sometimes, if Ava got the timing right and said just the right things, she could convince someone to join her in the shower.
So, tonight, during her second shower of the day, Ava was pressed against and three fingers deep inside one Lieutenant Beatrice Lin-Watson while the rest of their crew was obliviously watching Sharknado: The 4th Awakens across the firehouse.
Here's how Ava managed it.

So, Beatrice cleared her throat and asked, “Who are you?”
The girl spun around, her hair whipping around her body as she did, performance forgotten. For a moment she just stared at Beatrice with wide brown eyes, mouth half open.
Then she said, “Oh fuck.”
And she completely disappeared, letting the wooden spoon clatter to the floor.

Summary
Never before an optimist, the feeling of hope used to be somewhat of a foreign concept for Beatrice. It had always been considered impolite to wish for more than she was given, for she had been taught that greed was a sin against God.
Despite this, and against her initial resistance, hope had settled deep in her chest that day, on those steps, some time ago, and never left. It’d festered there — grown, stretched, and spread, like a rash. Hope rooted itself in every fiber of her being, gaining strength even as the time away from Ava lengthened; almost parasitic the way it burrowed so far down into her skin that it reached the innermost part of her. It stuck to her, like sweat, persistent in its very nature. She hoped for Ava every day — and she hated it.

“You could always kiss it better.”
Beatrice laughs, but it comes out strangled. She drops her gaze, keeping her eyes firmly on her hand. “I believe that’s the Halo’s job.”
“The Halo doesn’t have lips,” she says, matter-of-factly. “You have lips.”
"Yes." Beatrice hopes she’s too drunk to notice her blazing cheeks. “Thank you for that observation.”

Beatrice is standing stiffly across the room. She rolls her shoulders, rolls her head on her neck, stares down at her hands. An unfamiliar smile slides across her face-- and Ava knows all of Beatrice’s smiles now, knows the polite nun smile and the customer service smile from the bar and the friendly smile for Hans and the small genuine one for Camila and the careful genuine one for when Ava makes her laugh and the less careful open one when Ava surprises her with coffee on the rare days she wakes up first-- and Ava’s stomach twists.

“We created it. But, biologically, it’s identical to any other. I have the same need for sleep, food, water.”
“Created it, huh?” Ava leaned a shoulder against the doorframe. “Based on what?”
“Input from our limited data on earth. We developed a cache of features and arranged them.”
“Ah, like create a Sim.” Ava nodded. At Beatrice’s blank look, she said, “It’s an earth game. We’ll play sometime. And, um, you know. You guys did a great job. At arranging.”
“Thank you.” Beatrice blinked. “It was designed to be aesthetically pleasing.”
“So you’re hot on purpose.” She blew out a long breath. “Honestly, thank God. That’s kind of relieving. I was worried I was—”

“I was told I would be able to meet with the chef this afternoon,” Beatrice says, as politely as she can manage. She’s meant to start working tomorrow and she hasn’t even met the executive chef yet, outside of traded emails where she was swayed by the promise of full autonomy into leaving her position as pastry chef at one of the only restaurants in the city with three Michelin stars for a fledgling fusion tapas joint sandwiched between a pierogi stand and a vape shop on the lower east side that got an upstart Michelin star in its first year of operation.

“Yep, that’s —” a woman sat directly in front of where Beatrice was standing twisted around to face her. It was Ava. Unavoidably, it was Ava. Unquestionably, it was Ava. Unfortunately, it was Ava.
“Oh my God,” Ava Silva declared, a wide grin forming across her face. “Beatrice?”
After a nebulous not-quite-friendship at university, Ava disappears unceremoniously from Beatrice's life. Some years later, the two meet again, in Accident & Emergency.

“She’s breathing.” Beatrice’s fingers twitch against Ava’s neck, near where her head is cradled in her lap. “Her pulse is fast. But she’s alive. Beyond that, I can’t tell.”
An emergence, an escape, a twenty-four hour van ride, an abundance of beds (but no lack of sharing despite it), and any number of feelings clamoring through. [Immediately post-season 1, in five parts.]

Summary
Because it turns out the Halo can want things now, sort of. Not the way a human would, with thoughts or motivation or articulable desires. The Halo wants things the way a tree wants water and shoves a taproot through flagstone to get it, which is all well and good for the tree, but less so for the idiot trying to keep her patio intact. Unfortunately for Ava, she’s both the idiot and the taproot. The flagstone is her dignity. The water – for reasons becoming rapidly and unavoidably apparent – is Beatrice.

Summary
And Beatrice is not good; she is not holy; she is not worthy of her vows. She is taking advantage of Ava’s good nature, of her warmth, of her need for physical intimacy. She knows that she is. She knows that when Ava reaches for her in the dark it isn’t because she’s reaching for Beatrice so much as she’s reaching for someone. A body. Any body would suffice. Beatrice’s body, with its racing heart and its trembling fingers, with its weak-kneed sensibilities and inability to say no, just happens to be near.
And Beatrice is not good; she is not holy; because she does not stop it from happening. She leans into it. She draws Ava into herself, she breathes in the scent of Ava’s shampoo, she revels in the warmth of her skin beneath her clothes, in the perfect way Ava’s soft curves seem to meld against her own hardness. Beatrice is all sharp edges. She is stern, she is steel.
She is weak, for Ava and everything about her.

Summary
At the end of the fucking world, Beatrice is beautiful.
Not in that pseudo-glamorous way vampires always are when they’re the subject of movies and television shows, or the gothic elegance of how they’re described in books, but in a simple, effortless way that makes Ava’s heartbeat feel at home a little too close to the surface of her chest. To Ava, the entire apocalypse is a vivid, vibrant neon, from the city's kaleidoscopic street signs to the complicated collision of elements that spark inside of her body whenever Beatrice runs her tongue over the edge of a fang, or laughs at one of her stupid jokes, or brings her lips to the delicate skin of Ava's wrist and drinks.
If you want my blood this badly, Beatrice, Ava says with a smirk, you can earn it.
