Summary
His mother’s eyes darken with weariness Shane recognizes instinctually, a grief separate but not wholly unlike his own. A tear makes its way down her cheek, but Shane’s stay put, stubborn, cradled in his lashline like if he doesn’t cry, maybe none of this is as bad as he thinks it is.
“Just—I just have to ask,” she says. Her voice lowers to a whisper, that ever-steady corner of her mouth wavering as her palm envelopes his cheek. “How long have you been hurting?”
My whole life, probably, Shane thinks. I'm sorry. I just didn’t know.
--
[Or: Shane learns that skill, passion, and meticulous control aren't necessarily immunity, and that rest isn't something he's owed so much as he has to carve out for himself; sometimes with a whisper, sometimes with his pride on the line, sometimes on his hands and knees. And still, regardless, despite—he refuses to give up on this either, even if this time it means believing in himself instead of familiar schedules or rituals. Even if it means his whole life has to change to do it.
Even if it means having to believe that he's worth that much in the first place.]

Summary
Shane did not have an eating disorder. He didn’t have a “food problem”, he was just a dedicated athlete. He wanted to be the best, and to do that you have to make sacrifices. So maybe he doesn’t drink pop that isn’t diet, and maybe he skips lunch, and maybe when he doesn’t know exactly what’s in his food he has a panic attack. So what? It didn’t mean anything.
Ilya thought differently.
or; 5 times Shane didn’t need help + 1 time he got it.

Summary
Shane liked being good at things, and Shane was good at hockey. His mom loved hockey. His friends and classmates had always loved hockey. Hell, Canada loved hockey. Being good at hockey was like being good at being Canadian boy and being the best at something was like being good at being Asian.
OR
heavily exploring the pressure shane hollander’s under—undereating, overexercising, missing home, being a baby-faced teenage phenom, and, of course, being mixed with an asian mom :p basically a character study into shane’s habits of restriction and self-punishment. he has denied himself every pleasure in life… up until ilya rozanov. he’s the one thing he can’t refuse.

Summary
Shane rests his head against the cold of the tile. The feeling is almost the very same of last night. Even the run of water down from his hair across his face is like the blood all over again.
“Nothing I did tonight was a lie.”
Ilya only stares, the cold of his eyes sharp. “You are not well. You—”
“Gee, thanks, I didn't realise that.”
Ilya mutters something in Russian, eyes trailing to the ceiling, before he bites out, “Stop.”
Shane does. If one thing is now known to him, it's how it feels when someone doesn't listen to that word.
“You can't deal on your own with this. I was there last night, yes? So I must be there for the remainder of it. By you, while you deal with it.”
Or;
Shane gets assaulted during a night out with Ilya. Healing is not a linear line, rather it is a darkness he cannot navigate alone. This is the aftermath, and their relationship through snippets.Bookmarked by bex

Summary
“I was gonna ask you,” Shane repeated stubbornly, tightening his grip, “to come to my cottage this summer.”
Hayden made a strangled, half-choked sound. “What?”
“Don’t go to Russia,” Shane said earnestly, the words tumbling over each other. “Come with me. It’s private. No one’ll know. It’s quiet. You’ll like it.”
“Shane,” Ilya said, his voice straining now, “you know we can’t do that.”
“But we’d have fun,” Shane insisted, pouting slightly. “A week. Maybe two.”
“Ilya’s special,” Shane added suddenly, glaring weakly at Hayden like this should have been obvious all along.
Then, without warning, without preamble:
“’Cause I loveeee himmm.”
-
Or: What if Hayden was with Shane when Ilya visited Shane in the hospital?
