“Ellie.”
The two of them collide, Joel lifting his niece into his arms with an ease that finds Sarah swallowing every ounce of envy she feels from when her father could hold her like that, back when she was as little as Ellie is. Guilt drowns the envy. She can’t possibly wish herself in Ellie’s position right now. Get a grip, Sarah.
She stands off to one side, her eyes scanning their surroundings. There’s a room behind Ellie with glass walls and a sliding door, but the curtains are partially drawn inside, so all she can see is a nurse hanging a blood bag on the metal stand by the bed. There’s a smartly dressed woman still sitting on a chair beside where Ellie had been. The woman offers Sarah a tight smile and her stomach churns about the fact that this complete stranger has a better idea of the situation than Sarah.
But if Ellie’s inconsolable out here in Joel’s arms, then that means that behind those curtains, must be—

They’d managed to make it back home, but Sarah had been drooping ever closer to unconsciousness and Joel was terrified that if she slipped a little bit further, he would lose her altogether.

He has them both every time. He loves Her in every universe, and it’s always because of Sarah.

Toni hadn’t meant to cause too much trouble, but she needed to earn her keep and fill her time. And hey, she’s always had good upper-body strength, so she had figured that she had to try. For the fun of it, of course. Though, she hadn’t exactly wanted to get spotted. And yes, there was a particular guard that she did enjoy pissing off, and yes, she wanted to prove to Marcus, Martha’s betrothed, that not only did she have the balls to pull it off, she also had the skill.
So, obviously, it’s not her fault that she stole the crown of the lost princess. Toni didn’t have much of a choice.
But hey, they could at least get a decent portrait of her for her wanted poster.

He gets bitten three days after Ellie’s tattoo while hauling an infected off of a trainee, a 17 year old named Clara who reminds him of Ellie with her sass and her smile, even though she’s a good half a foot taller than his little slip of a girl. She’s a good kid, has a solid head on her shoulders, but she’s still learning, and even with the trainees paired off with an adult, shit happens.
