“For the gallery owner,” Lycaon says, presenting the box with a slight bow, “on the opening of his most ambitious art exhibition to date.”
Hugo crosses his arms, unimpressed. “That excuse would be more convincing if I was one of the artists presenting my artwork at this show.”
Still, Hugo knows what this is. They didn't celebrate his birthday either when they were younger, at Hugo’s own request; after the first birthday Hugo weathered since Jack took him in, Lycaon stopped pestering him about it. Yet, Lycaon always found subtle ways to mark the occasion, by gifting him small tokens under various excuses, some more reasonable than others.
It seems some things don’t change, even with the intervening years of estrangement between them.
“All right,” Hugo acquiesces, and gestures at Lycaon to open the box for him. “Impress me.”
(Hugo doesn't care to celebrate his birthday; he'd prefer if everyone treated it as just another day of the year. Even so, his trusted companions still find ways to show their regard and appreciation for him.
Hugo spends a day with Robin and Vivian, with Lycaon, and with a precious memory of the past).
