It was against Techno’s nature, as a siamese fighting mer, to let others so close. Phil was the exception, as the mer who saved his life, but there wasn’t supposed to be anyone else.
And then, one day, Phil came home with a tiny bundle of teeth and claws, and Techno's dormant soul-scales finally lit up. The intricate white all along his tale and going up his sides; swirls and dots all coming together in a delicately perfected pattern, glowed like the sea-lanterns that lit their cave. A rush of emotion rolled through him, and he couldn't help but tip closer, peeking at the little hurting mer in Phil's arms.
"Techno," Phil said softly, and the mer shifted, blinking two huge bright blue eyes at him, "meet Tommy."
or, Techno finds his soulmate. He immediately gets attached.

Summary
The chilling doubt wasn’t unfamiliar, but it was for the first time potent enough for Wilbur to find himself regretting the decision to return.
More than a year.
Wilbur had been gone without a trace for more than a year, and now he was crawling back with his metaphorical tail tucked between his legs. An infant hidden away beneath the ratty second-hand coat, and the weight he had always thought himself strong enough to bear, now an almost crushing burden.

“Toms,” Wilbur turns his attention to him for the first time since being home. They’ve been here for hours. “How’s school? You still struggling with maths?” An innocent question, a stupidly innocent question that Wilbur asks to be nice, to be pleasant, to catch up with his baby brother.
“I haven’t had any calls from his teachers recently, so he must be.” A joke, he knows Phil is joking but it twists his heart in the wrong direction and shatters any shards of hope Tommy had left for his family.
“I’m in college, for video editing.” He says, because he is, and they don’t seem to know that. “I passed maths with an A.” He frowns, picking up his fork and using it to grab a piece of the garlic bread and dropping it on his plate. “Like two years ago.” He adds.
The silence is unpleasantly loud, it’s far more familiar than the laughing. He almost feels bad.
Almost.

Summary
Then the man pressed his palm against Tommy's.
Air left his lungs in a rush. Tommy stared at their joined hands in wonder, stumped fingers ending with a black curved claw each and hard pads caving in when they came in contact with one another. His hands were so much smaller in comparison with the man's, but the similarities were too many to ignore.
"You're like me," were Tommy's first words in eternity, raspy and hoarse and marveled all the same.
"What's your name?" the man asked in a low, rumbling voice. His tone, leveled yet so so tender, felt like gently prying the words out of Tommy's chest.
"Wilbur used to call me Tommy," he said, his lips barely moving.
"Tommy," the man repeated. "I'm Technoblade. Techno."

Summary
It took no longer than a couple hours for them to take Tommy away.
Wilbur puts his head in his hands and lets out a deep sigh. He’s back in the Syndicate’s main base and sitting on one of the couches in the medical ward. Tommy is asleep in the next room over, getting some much needed rest.
Through all of the turmoil, Wilbur manages to find a solid hold on one emotion;
Relief.
Sheer and utter relief that he can confidently say that Tommy is asleep, safe, in the next room. That he isn’t back with the heroes that stole him. That he is alive. That all of this is real and not just another cruel nightmare conjured by his own mind.

Sequel to Throwing CautionOr: After the battle, Wilbur takes Tommy back to the Syndicate's base so he can heal. Arriving at the base brings with it the realization that Tommy still needs to be introduced to the rest of the Syndicate. Everything should be fine.
