Plus, going back to sleep meant dreaming- which was something Ryland had started to detest. His dreams were often weird mock ups of whatever memories his brain hadn’t quite put together just yet, and he’d sometimes wake up with another mini flashback, another small puzzle piece about who he was on earth, and as soon as it was summoned to surface level, it was gone under the waves of amnesia once more.
Ryland Grace hated dreaming. He dreamt he would become a successful scientist, that failed. He dreamt of being able to live a quiet life as a school teacher, that failed. Even his actual dreams seemed to mock him, showing him glimpses of his life back on earth. Places he'd never see again. Things he'd never do again. People he'd never talk to again.
That's what you assume, anyway, until one of those people gets yanked out of a submarine full of blood... in the middle of space.

Summary
Being alone isn't easy. Jonathan Byers just makes it really look like it. in 1983, Will vanished- leaving Jonathan in a limbo between struggling with the loss and supposed death of his only sibling, his mother who is steadily going crazy, and a certain boy who is driving him mad enough to make him question everything and everyone- at the worst time he possibly can. Steve isn't *chasing* Jonathan- he's lightly padding beside him, occasionally muttering something soft, and it feels like torture. He doesn't know how to cope with his newfound feelings towards new friends, the loss of a family member and his mental health crumbling all at once- the walls are closing in. And he doesn't know how much he can keep pushing them apart.

Rocky didn’t understand it- of course, how could he? As much time as he spent with Grace, humans were complicated. Their emotions especially so.
And Rocky had only ever interacted directly with one human, after all.
But... Grace wasn't happy.
They'd found another human!“Why Grace scared? Question,” Rocky chirped, confused. “New human friend for Grace- thought Grace would be happy.”
Swallowing, feeling a lump in his throat, Grace pushed himself back up to stand. “Sorry,” he said again, smiling bitterly. “I guess I should be happy, but… I’m just thinking of all the reasons Earth would send more humans out into space- and most of them aren’t good ones.”

OR: Grace isn't happy when the Eridians announce they've found a new human. Not at all. He liked his life alone. He didn't want to deal with any more drama from Earth!
This new human meant shattering the peaceful little life he had built for himself.
Meeting Simon completely upends Grace's day-to-day routine.
