Summary
He’s still reeling with nerves when he leaves the bathroom and the playlist is still stuck in the 80s, which doesn’t really help. He drags himself to the bar and pours himself a glass of punch. It tastes about as bad as it did three years ago and he almost chokes on it when Michelle sidles up behind him and taps his shoulder.
“Jesus fucking Chri – ”
“So what’s your deal these days?” she asks, visibly unimpressed by his poor attempt at saving face and not spilling his entire drink on himself, “I was worried you’d be all different now but as far as I can tell you’re still a dork.”
He blinks.
“Thank you?”
“Wasn’t meant to be a compliment.”
“Oh.”
The laugh that escapes him takes him by surprise and he needs a second to get a grip on himself. For a moment Michelle looks like she might laugh, too – most likely at him – but she ultimately raises an eyebrow instead, which is also okay because despite the mild insult she just threw at him, there’s a small smile spreading on her face.

Summary
They met at her brother’s birthday/New Year’s Eve party back in 2011. The playlist was a tribute to the past decade and MJ was making peanut butter sandwiches in the kitchen. She wasn’t interested in anything he had to say until he mentioned that a friend of his was an intern at Stark Industries. That’s when she locked eyes with him and asked him about his stance on global arms trade.
Whatever he said, it launched a long debate on everything and nothing and he liked how they bounced back and forth between topics and how they agreed to disagree more often than he could count. He liked that neither of them was eager to ‘win’ the conversation.
He joined her outside on the balcony when the new year was still an hour or so away and watched her light a cigarette with a matchstick. He tried to convince her that she should quit smoking because it was bad for her, but she just smirked and called him a 'loser' and he knew he wanted to be her friend.

She lifts her head, her eyes sad and full of worry, and he wants to tell her that she’s right. He wants to tell her that he knows what happened and that there’s no need for her to be afraid because he has a plan that’ll get them out of here. He wants to tell her that she can count on him because he knows how to fix this, but he doesn’t know shit.
A snowflake settles on the tip of his nose.
He takes her hand, entwines their fingers, and all he wants to do is wake up. All he wants for them both is to wake up, stretch their limbs, and roll their eyes because they’re still stuck in traffic, still forced to listen to Flash brag about god-knows-what, still two kids on an underwhelming school trip on a sunny Thursday morning in late May.
