Summary
Trixie met Katya in the sky. It was a simple transport job, untraceable money paid under the table in cold hard cash that Trixie was saving until she could buy a ship of her own and no longer need to work petty jobs anymore.
They’d been three days into the black and Trixie assumed she’d met everyone on board already until she ran — literally ran — into Katya in the mess haul. She rushed to apologise, but Katya laughed and scraped herself off the floor. Her hair was pulled back into a claw clip that could barely contain it. She wasn’t wearing any shoes, just a long flowing skirt and tight white tank top. Trixie stared at her as she grinned and said, “Oh, who are you?” like she wasn’t the odd one out in this scenario.

The woman steps out onto the porch to get a better look at the weirdo staring into her house. Her shockingly blonde hair is cut into a long, fluffy bob, her face scrunched as she examines Trixie. Recognition washes over her like a wave, brow relaxing, mouth dropping open just a touch. Trixie swallows hard, her throat jumping on a sob. She can’t stop crying. Her nose has started to run.
“Oh, it’s you. I didn’t recognise you at first, you’re all grown up now,” the woman, Katya, says. “Well you better get out of the cold. It’s only 15 minutes to midnight.”

She has too much going on in her life to be bunking off at Katya’s house but here she is anyway, and it’s not as if Katya is going to ask her to leave.

It’s 3pm on a bright LA Tuesday when Katya receives the now routine telephone call, answering within a tenth of a second of spotting the caller ID. It’s Trixie, obviously, her voice a little wet and a little thick through the crackly phone speaker as she asks, “Are you busy? Stupid question — are you home? Can I come over to your place and cry for a while?”
And Katya agrees before her brain has even fully comprehended Trixie’s request. No, of course she’s not busy, and even if she was there is nothing she wouldn’t cancel in a heartbeat if it meant securing a safe place for her best friend to weep her little heart out.
