Summary
Out of the two of them, she’s not sure who wins when it comes to lack of sleep.
It’s better when they’re together, by far, but some nights they’re thankful to get a few hours. Some nights they’ll curl into each other and stare blankly at the ceiling until their bodies pass out from sheer exhaustion.
Some nights they’re not even that lucky.
And that’s how Nancy finds herself in Jonathan’s t-shirt, riding shotgun in his Ford at two in the morning.

chapter 1: She’s sure she’ll tell everyone their first date was developing photos in the school’s darkroom on a Friday after school, before hanging out with each other the rest of the night, two weeks after they scorched a demon out of his brother and closed a gate to another dimension. She’s sure he’ll argue for the rest of their lives that it wasn’t actually a date.
A series of jancy fics I wrote on tumblr back in 2018 that never made it onto here (these were all written between season 1 to season 3, however can be read whenever!!)

She thought about kissing Jonathan before. A little. Back when they were 13, and she was desperate for her first kiss. And then later on, when they were watching a scary movie, she curled into his shoulder every time there was a jump scare. When she could smell his cologne as he walked next to her at the mall. Her mind had wandered before.
But he was always Jonathan, her loyal best friend first. Always there for her, ready to tag along for any adventure she had planned at the drop of a hat. Did she actually have feelings for him? Could she have feelings for him? Did he have feelings for her? Wouldn’t he say something if he did?
Of course, he wouldn’t. He was Jonathan.

Nancy stops chewing on her toast and Jonathan goes red right beside her. The fact, maybe the irony, that this is the second time in twenty-four hours they’ve choked on their breakfasts while being confronted about their relationship is not lost on them.
It’s not even a hard answer. Yes.

What even is love? She thinks sourly.
'Cause this certainly isn't it. The push she feels when her boyfriend shoots her those expectant eyes, begging her to say the words back. Not when she lugs herself to his basketball games, not even finding it in herself to cheer when they score. Not when they have study dates at his house alone and she feels more fear and discomfort than anywhere else in the entire world it seems.
(An awful voice betrays her in the back of her mind. It doesn't feel like this at Jonathan's. )

“Do you have any idea where we’re going?” She teased, glancing at him from the passenger seat.
He didn’t. “Definitely.” He nodded, considering how long it’d take to drive them somewhere actually cool. Chicago would be a nightmare because of traffic, but there was nothing that they hadn't really done already in Indianapolis.
“Liar.” She grinned, reaching for his hand. Idly, she traced his scar with her fingers, her head bopping along to the mixtape she put on. She’d grinned wickedly when she pulled it out, his handwriting messy and somewhat smudged, but 'For Nancy. Valentines Day 1985.' was still legible on it from last year.

For the first time in six months she didn’t have a ride to school, or someone to eat (or not eat) lunch with in his car or in the dark room. He hadn’t snuck in her window, not that he normally did Wednesday’s, but he hadn’t even called.

She was exhausted even though she just woke up, they all were and would be for the next few days. She took a few moments to bear her senses, although she knew exactly where she was the second her eyes opened. She knew exactly whose sheets she was tangled up in as she shifted slightly, knew exactly who her bed partner was.

It only made her more determined to stay patient.

She wanted to hear about how excited he was after another day in the FBI program, not about how he was once again having to strategize about how to take down the next big bad.
