Summary
Harry Potter grew up learning the difference between being quiet and being small.
The cupboard under the stairs has no windows, that's the truth of it. No light that lingers. No proof that anything exists outside long enough to matter. Only darkness that doesn't feel like night, because night ends - this doesn't. Harry learns to count on it. He learns to breathe in patterns that don't attract attention. He learns the exact shape of himself against the mattress, as if repetition might make him real enough to want to keep.
There are rules for surviving a place that listens. Don't look too long. Don't answer when something answers back first. Don't mistake silence for emptiness. And sometimes - when the house above creaks and pretends it is just but a house - Harry thinks that there is something in the cupboard with him. Not a sound. Not a shape. Something that knows how to wait.
When he leaves Privet Drive, he expects it to stop. It doesn't. Hogwarts is larger. Brighter. Full of voices that insist on being human. But it seems Harry is still learning the difference between being quiet and being small. And Draco Malfoy keeps looking at him like he can see the gap between those two things.
