“Mother, father,” Jiang Cheng greets them, his head bowed low and awaiting whatever is going to come his way.
“Sect Leader Nie wants to go on a night hunt with you,” Yu Ziyuan tells him and Jiang Cheng almost flinches with surprise.
“It would be my honour,” he then formally says, hoping that neither of his parents noticed but when he dares to look at him, both of them already look disappointed.
“Telling you to not mess this up is probably asking too much of you already,” Jiang Fengmian muses, his gaze disinterested and not even on Jiang Cheng. “I guess the only thing we can really ask of you is to not die.”

Summary
“I will do it,” he says, effectively cutting his parents off mid fight and both turn around to him with wide eyes, though for very different reasons.
His mother is already going into a panic, while his father is simply surprised that Jiang Cheng could be able to do the right thing.
Jiang Cheng is very tired of both of their behaviour and this is a nice way out for him.
He was supposed to lead the first division tomorrow. He would have died anyway. And dying for a God he has admired for a long time seems like the better option, given all things.

Lan Xichen’s eyes are wide and full of worry as he looks at Jiang Cheng, as if Jiang Cheng defying anything Shufu says will be the worst thing to happen. As if any of the Lan rules apply to Jiang Cheng at Yunmeng Jiang.
