Pairin came to the Verdigris House as an apprentice when she was eleven, sold off by her mother. She grew up there, being taught dancing and music, memorizing poetry, learning to play go and shogi (although never as well as some of her fellow apprentices). She learned to make herself beautiful, with cosmetics and nail paint and clothing that accentuated her best features. She learned to read and write, but always struggled with it - her letters often came out backwards, and so she learned early on to have someone else look over her writing, or better yet, have them do it for her.
