“It’s your birthday, isn’t it?” Effie asks, mildly.
“Lucky me,” Haymitch mutters back, turning his head to offer her his most award-winning grin. The roguish rascal he had turned into during his interview. Sharp teeth pulled back just barely short of a snarl.
Effie seems unaffected, completely unbothered as she settles down across the table from him. She folds her hands over each other, resting them gently on the table. Her head tilts to the side, almost imperceivable, her eyes soft, just like the rest of her face. The look of sympathy she so often turns onto him is nothing new. Her eyes flit between his face, her mouth opening and closing for a handful of seconds as the time ticks away into nothingness, disappearing through both of their hands.
“Save it,” Haymitch says, the first to speak. He twists his head back to the side, squeezing his eyes shut as the pounding headache he’s been nursing returns full force. “Don’t get a cake.”
Effie makes a disapproving noise. “I’ll do you one better,” she says, and disappears from the corner of his eye like a ghost.

“You see, kid, I did some stuff that our glorious leader didn’t approve of during my games. Not a good look for a Quell-- or any year, I suppose. So when I came home--” he stopped himself to take a long drink, pulling himself back into the present, away from the smell of smoke and the sound of screams and the ground beneath his back as he was held down and away, away, away-- “well, kid, I didn’t see my family again except for the pretty little box we put in the ground.”
Finnick blanched at this, hands releasing each other before he could stop himself. Trying to play the move off as casual, he started tapping his fingers on his knees, which just made Haymitch laugh.
“No, it’s okay. It’s a dark story. But it’s not over.”...
or: Haymitch learned his lesson so others didn't have to. Years later, Mags calls about one of her Victors.
