There was a buzzing sound, and a beep, before the same words sounded again:
“—all me back. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.”
Another buzz, then again: “—still here… anyway, call me back. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.”
Joyce realised with a terrible lurch to her heart that Will hadn’t called Mike. He wasn’t finally speaking to him again—it was a cassette tape. A cassette tape of Mike’s voice, a recording from what must’ve been the end of a missed phone call, and he was replaying Mike’s last sentence over and over. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.
When Joyce first saw Mike at five years old—a sweet, caring little thing, jumping to Will’s aid without a second thought—she’d never thought it would end up like this.

“’Morning,” Mike grumbled, voice low from sleep.
“Noon,” Max corrected, as if she hadn’t only woken up thirty minutes before him.
“Wow,” he replied, squinting at the light. “Nobody thought to wake me?”
It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

or: Mike and Will have been together for a year and a half when El comes back. The problem is, El assumes she and Mike are still together. The bigger problem is that Mike doesn’t realize Will thinks he might choose her.

“It’s our 30% off deal for couples out shopping on Valentine's Day; a few of the stores around the city are offering the same thing.”
“Oh no—” Will started.
“Yes, we’ll take it,” Mike said, cutting him off.
Or, While out shopping they get mistaken as a couple, and it earns them a 30% off their purchase. Mike gets an idea for how they should spend the rest of their day, and Will agrees. Then Mike realizes things for himself very quickly.
