The pounding in Sherlock’s skull was rhythmic, a heavy, dull thrum that thudded in time with the scuffle of someone’s feet – a stranger – across his bedroom floor. And, judging by the frantic nature of the movements, he was currently attempting a runner.
Nice, Sherlock thought, a bitter, acidic spike of self-loathing blooming in his chest. Another one who can’t wait to get out. What a pathetic loser you’ve become.
The thought of being unwanted woke something in his chest, dragging up the memory he had been trying to drown in alcohol: John.
